The company that I worked for issued Iphone to me so I have been using Iphone 4, 5, 6, 7 , 11 and the latest was 12. Now that I retired I don't have the phone any more. If I get the Iphone 14 it would be familiar because I have used the Iphones in the past. However, as I have been using the Iphone I hate Apple policy of restricting files transfer between a computer and the phone via cable. They want everything going thru the cloud and I hate that. So I am thinking of getting the Galaxy S23 but I have used the Android phone very little. I had an old Android tablet years ago but I am not familiar with the Android OS.
What would you suggest? I think I am leaning toward the Samsung but I am afraid it would be difficult to use. Although I have used the Iphone for years I still think it's difficult to use so never had an Android phone it may be too difficult for me?

As a long time Apple user, I would encourage you to stick with what you know. While I understand "fear of the cloud," I trust Apple. Of course, I'm not storing anything there that I need to hide, so I'm not paranoid. Apple has top grade encryption and rock solid security features on and in their systems. iCloud keeps my iPhone and MacBook Air in sync. I do back up my phone with the Mac, and I don't keep everything in iCloud, but I use iCloud for my iPhone photos and the occasional document I need on my phone.

I think Androids are fine, but I won't go there, because my Apple ecosystem knowledge goes back decades. I used an Android device for a day, ten years ago, and that was enough to say, "No, thanks."

I love my S20, but then I've had Android Samsung phones since the S2.

Yes, kinda seems that way.....
(I never bought anything Apple, don't plan on it either.)

"Kinda" is the operative word here. If you have no need of the integration the Apple system offers, then I agree with you, any Android phone will suffice for the average person and the added bonus is they are cheaper to buy than a comparable iPhone. However, if you need and make use of the system integration the Apple offers to its users, then the Apple world IS the place to be. Android, Windows, ChromeBook, Google just do not get the job done when it comes to how Apple can take data and instantly make that data available on any other Apple device you may own. The amount of time it saves me and other Apple users each day is valuable not to mention there is no need to re-enter data on multiple devices as you must when you own Android, Windows, ChromeBook, Google devices.

My criteria isn't price as I have said my choices are the 2 basic phones the Apple Iphone 14 and the Samsung S23 both are base models and priced exactly the same.

I have had six Android phones, three of which were Samsung models, none of which would integrate my data with my Windows computer or my ChromeBook or my Windows Dell laptop. Once I found the Apple world, integration of data across all devices was available to me, a real game changer not to mention time saved.

Ok, so price is not the stumbling block, then there is only one way for you and ONLY you to settle your issue. Buy one of each and learn how to use each fully and completely. Then, once you have completed the learning curve for each phone you will have your answer and be able to chose the correct phone for YOU and get on with your life!

Not sure what your "integrate data" is referring to but I can move files and photos between my Windows 10 computer and my S20 in multiple ways, several of them wireless...

Yes, it depends in the individuals needs (or desires).
The interaction between my (our) droid(s), and our Windows boxes work perfectly fine for our needs.
Don't need mass integration between a bunch of devices.
Actually, the "mass integration" that we currently have works just fine.

Curious.... Re-enter what data? I don't have to do that.

Let us see if I can explain: yes you can move files/photos between your two devices, but you have to physically make the "move"but, in the Apple world data or photos you have entered into your Apple computer move to your phone automatically without your involvement. Or, files or photos on your Apple phone appear on your Apple computer without your involvement, that is data integration, it is automatic. As a businessman, I am constantly updating and or importing information into my iPhone knowing that the same data is going to appear on my Mac computer and my Apple MacBook Pro laptop and my Apple iPad and my Apple watch.

Windows OS computers just do not talk to Android phones and Android phones do not talk to Windows OS computers hence for me they fail to get the job done efficiently and error-free.

I have the Samsung S22 Ultra, moved up from the S20 Ultra and love it. My girlfriend had the Iphone X and was super jealous of my S22 pics. She traded hers in on the Iphone 14 Pro and has been terribly disappointed, her pics are still nowhere close to those from my Samsung. When her 2 year commitment is up in 17 more months she has decided she will be switching. Between the weak imaging and all the proprietary Apple BS she has had enough. I don't blame her at all!

I have a Galaxy Android, and it is very easy to use. I won't touch anything of Apple's. Way to expensive, and like you said; Apple tells you how you can use their Iphone. That Galaxy S23 has a very nice camera!

The S23 is their flagship, not a base model.
