My question is "Why should we care?". Canon, Nikon, Sony, OM, Fugi, etc. are all very capable cameras. I think it should be up to the individual photojournalist to decide which system to use.

It wouldn't be practical to have a room full of cameras where any photographer could just walk-in and pick one at random. Since there are tens of thousands of presets, how would they know what they were getting.

Some argument could be made for a one brand policy so that the inventory of lenses and accessories could be shared.

Apart from that, each photographer should be able to use the brand and system that they are comfortable with. Photographers are a combination of artists, technicians, adventurers and story tellers. The tools they use are accessories to those skills and talents.

I would think that each photographer should have a "Camera allowance or budget" that enables the person to select the tools that best enables them to demonstrate those talents and skills.

Now when Canon starts making inroads and now has greater sales than Sony again it's all of a sudden nothing and ALL cameras are great?

Because people are always seeking validation of their choices and decisions. This is especially true if they have made those decision without full knowledge and understanding of why they did so.

Also, as we get older, we progressively feel more isolated and alone. Belonging to a group, any group, is very important. Read between the lines of posts. People want friends and to be friends. Rejection either is or gradually becomes a big deal. This forum isn't my "group." The young people and kids at school are. There are three or four folks here who I have come to respect. They are divided equally between people who I agree with and people who I do not agree with. That's how I learn.

As a photojournalist I use Nikon, because that’s what I have. I routinely work alongside other journalists using Canon, Sony and whatever. Honestly what we’re shooting with never comes up unless it’s brand new tech which might be discussed out of curiosity. They are all just tools doing the same job.

And, as usual, your lens is bigger than my lens.

Funny how songs change from when Nikon dominated the pro world.

I grew up in Los Angeles. Just because the Times says something, that doesn’t make it true.

I was involved in some acquisitions like this. The manufacturers offer up different service / warranty programs, discounts, add ons, pricing, support, training, upped prices for trade ins, etc. We also had a team of folks who did so called product evaluations but that can get wonky due to various biases. There often was the notion of familiarity, such as not having to retrain an organization on the new widget. I have seen lawsuits come from some of these evals as well. It’s a total pain. While folks here might focus on brand, the inside workings of these deals would be interesting.

I suspect that the number of users at the Times is quite low.

Anyone who think is this was a bunch of pro photogs sitting around and simply picking their favorite system is naive. Lots of moving parts.

Ain’t that the truth. Subscribed for over 40 years but cancelled due to lack of journalistic ethics. It’s a shadow of its former self. Sad.

Why do you care enough to write about it.

My question is, why over the years whenever Canon moved their physical location did they moved closer to Nikon, Melville?

The Los Angeles Times Selects Canon as Official Imaging Provider
MELVILLE, NY, June 22, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, and the Los Angeles Times, the West Coast’s leading news organization, announced today a new multi-year partnership that makes Canon the Official Imaging Provider of the L.A. Times.

“As one of the world’s most notable newspapers, the Los Angeles Times had numerous digital imaging solutions the company could have selected as a partner,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The range of Canon cameras and lenses, as well as our industry-leading service and support, can help the Los Angeles Times connect readers with high quality, impactful visual content.”

The Los Angeles Times’ mission is to inform, engage and inspire people through its high-quality journalism and compelling storytelling. Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei – all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future – complements that mission and forms the basis of a partnership that will support visual storytelling that originates in California and resonates around the world.

“The Los Angeles Times has a long and distinguished history of visual journalism, and Canon’s cameras have been an invaluable tool for our news photographers for generations,” said Chris Argentieri, President & C.O.O. of the Los Angeles Times.

“Our partnership with Canon will allow us to outfit our staff with best-in-class imaging equipment and expand on the range of visual journalism and storytelling we produce.”

As the Los Angeles Times’ official imaging provider, The Times’ award-winning photo and video journalists and the L.A. Times Studios video production team will use a range of Canon equipment, including Cinema E.O.S. cameras, lenses and accessories; P.T.Z. and remote cameras and accessories; camcorders and accessories; and other Canon digital cameras, lenses and accessories for use in newsgathering and video production.

In addition, Canon will become the presenting sponsor of the L.A. Times Short Docs, a showcase for short films that amplify underrepresented voices and foster diversity in the film community, and will commission a branded video series on iconic photographs of Los Angeles captured by L.A. Times photographers.

l think an interesting aspect of this story is that the LA Times still has photographers. Back in 2013, the Chicago Sun Times laid off its entire photography staff and told its reporters to take pictures with their cell phones. Meanwhile, much of our local TV field reporting takes place with shaky video taken with hand-held cell phones.

Funny how bitter people get when Canon takes the lead in sales.
And when agencies start going for Canon and especially ignore Nikon.
Pros are a miniscule number of total product sales in cameras. The very low ranking of Nikon shows that in being a far distant 3rd/4th competing with Pentax and Olympus.

Sad when a grown-ass man’s identity is so tied to a consumer product that any minor news item about that product is reason for him to crow and beat his breast and denigrate competing products.

NikonRumors today published a list of the top 5 best selling cameras at Japan's 5 major camera stores.

The Nikon Z8 is the number one seller at all 5. At two of them the Z9 is number 2 and the Z9 is number 3 at another.

At these stores it is Canon that is ranked among Panasonic and Fuji.

Ok that does it. I'm cancelling my subscription. Oh wait, I don't subscribe to the times. I guess I can't cancel.

I'm always happy when a camera company gets business. It helps to keep them all in business and competition between vendors is good for us consumers!
