Interesting direction of choice.
“Our partnership with Canon will allow us to outfit our staff with best-in-class imaging equipment and expand on the range of visual journalism and storytelling we produce.”

The Los Angeles Times Selects Canon as Official Imaging Provider
MELVILLE, NY, June 22, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, and the Los Angeles Times, the West Coast’s leading news organization, announced today a new multi-year partnership that makes Canon the Official Imaging Provider of the L.A. Times.

“As one of the world’s most notable newspapers, the Los Angeles Times had numerous digital imaging solutions the company could have selected as a partner,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The range of Canon cameras and lenses, as well as our industry-leading service and support, can help the Los Angeles Times connect readers with high quality, impactful visual content.”

The Los Angeles Times’ mission is to inform, engage and inspire people through its high-quality journalism and compelling storytelling. Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei – all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future – complements that mission and forms the basis of a partnership that will support visual storytelling that originates in California and resonates around the world.

“The Los Angeles Times has a long and distinguished history of visual journalism, and Canon’s cameras have been an invaluable tool for our news photographers for generations,” said Chris Argentieri, President & C.O.O. of the Los Angeles Times.

“Our partnership with Canon will allow us to outfit our staff with best-in-class imaging equipment and expand on the range of visual journalism and storytelling we produce.”

As the Los Angeles Times’ official imaging provider, The Times’ award-winning photo and video journalists and the L.A. Times Studios video production team will use a range of Canon equipment, including Cinema E.O.S. cameras, lenses and accessories; P.T.Z. and remote cameras and accessories; camcorders and accessories; and other Canon digital cameras, lenses and accessories for use in newsgathering and video production.

In addition, Canon will become the presenting sponsor of the L.A. Times Short Docs, a showcase for short films that amplify underrepresented voices and foster diversity in the film community, and will commission a branded video series on iconic photographs of Los Angeles captured by L.A. Times photographers.

I'm assuming they're getting a good deal on the equipment for publicizing this.

That is one small step for Canon mirrorless.

The Top News Services in the World, including Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannett Media including USA Today, now exclusively use Sony mirrorless gear for ALL their staff still photographers and staff videographers, WORLDWIDE. Many, many times the number of staff photographers as the LA Times has.

And AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9, and uses Nikon Z gear for all its staffers, WORLDWIDE. And AFP alone has many times more staff photographers than the LA Times.

None of these are moving to Canon mirrorless, none.

That is one for Canon. br br The Top news service... (show quote)

PS, May BCN sales show a sharp decline in Sony sales and a sharp rise in Canon sales with Canon surpassing Sony by a good margin.
As always Nikon was so far down it was mixed in with Pentax and Olympus.

The LA Times, as an organization, is a train wreck. Readership falling, goofball editorials, just laid off about a 100 or so people recently. They moved from the iconic LA Times building to El Segundo. Stupid. But somehow, in the middle of all that their photography staff is top notch. I’ve had a few dealings with them in very sensitive matters (police funerals and family coverage ) and they were very professional. They gained my trust many times over.

As far as gear, I suspect that it is like athletic shoes. Who ever offers the best deal gets the endorsement. The pro photogs there could shoot with a Brownie and make great photos. Great staff

What you dont seem to understand is pros once they have their cameras, are not buying new ones each month.

None of the Top News Service Staff Pros Worldwide that shoot with Sony and Nikon mirrorless are going to suddenly switch and buy Canon. The LA Times is a shadow of what they once were, and a tiny part of the pro camera market with its greatly reduced staff number. They have excellent shooters, but not many are left on staff, as most newspapers have gone the cheaper route of freelance photographers, and thus what the LA Times uses is not a good indicator of what the greater number of top pros have chosen.

I understand Canon mirrorless needs to have some good PR after the TOP News Services Worldwide went with Sony and Nikon mirrorless. Canon mirrorless wont be able to make any inroads into those vastly larger numbers of staff pro shooters worldwide, just the reality.

The reality, not fake news, the latest Yodobashi Top Ten Camera Sales in Japan, the home of all these brands:
https://www.thecamerainsider.com/2023/06/25/nikon-z8-tops-japanese-camera-sales-at-yodobashi/

1) Nikon Z8
2) Sony A7 IV
3) Sony A7 IV w/ kit lens
4) Sony A7R V
5) Nikon Zfc with the Z 16-50 VR SL
6) Canon EOS R50 Kit
7) Sony FX3
8) Canon EOS R10 with the RF-S18-150 IS STM Lens
9) Sony FX30
10) Sony A7S III

(quote): Yodobashi Camera reports sales form June 1 to 15, 2023. The Nikon Z8 still holds the number 1 position as they are able to keep up with demand, though some are reporting that they are waiting weeks for deliver, this is better than what Nikon Z9 customers had to face.

The Sony a74 continues to do well along with their cinema cameras with the FX3 and FX30 showing up as well as the a7S3, a three year old camera. Sony dominates the Yodobashi top 10 with six camera skus. Canon is largely absent with the exception of the entry level R10 and R50. This is largely due to the anticipation of the R5 II being announced later this year or early in 2024. (end quote)

Cheers and best to you all, whatever camera brand you prefer.

Funny how bitter people get when Canon takes the lead in sales.
And when agencies start going for Canon and especially ignore Nikon.
Pros are a miniscule number of total product sales in cameras. The very low ranking of Nikon shows that in being a far distant 3rd/4th competing with Pentax and Olympus.

Good for LA Times and Canon. Can't go wrong with such versatile, contemporary, innovative, & quality products as Canon provides.

Funny how folks get worked up trying to make this sound like Cannon is great or not. Fact is Cannon, Sony or Nikon all will turn out great pics. You sure as hell can't tell the difference in a newspaper!

This is only about money. Media is dying, newspapers quicker than others sadly. Cannon likely offered a sweeter deal. That doesn't make Cannon any better or worse than the others.

I work for a major TV network. Our last round of broadcast video cameras were Sony bodies with Cannon glass! Do you really think I or the other members of the staff cared?! It's just a tool and we went forth and shot news.

Back in my newspaper days (film!) I disliked Cannon because it focused the "wrong" direction (yes we had to turn the ring and focus, even if the object was moving!). Back then we had the Cannon shooters and Nikon shooters and you couldn't tell the difference in the photos.

Then why such an orgasmic hoopla here when some organizations started using Sony. One would have thought that Christ had shown up.
Now when Canon starts making inroads and now has greater sales than Sony again it's all of a sudden nothing and ALL cameras are great?
