I love these kinds of finds! Can you imagine the labor that went into this construction? It fits right into the scenery completely naturally. Wish we knew the history.

I think I read about this cabin in some Louis La Amour books! A famous gunfighter had a retreat hidden away plus there was (always) a girl involved....go look around for old skeletons & skulls with holes between the eyes. They were the bad guys...the good guy took all the gold though after killing them off. Then he & the girl took off for his ranch in California to start a new life.

You and me both love this type of historic structure, Mustanger...and so did old La Amour!! I noted it may initial post of this cabin some years back, had wanted to find a good example of an old crumbling, stone structure for many years. Drove all over the western states, keeping an eye out, until this popped up some 200 miles from home and set back in the cottonwoods!!

A very nice series of shots. I like #3, 4, 6 and 7. If those walls could talk, I wonder what they would say?

Jim, what a special cabin in it's day!! The floor definitely doesn't look safe, but interesting images. Thanks for sharing this treasure.

A few years back, much to my delight, I stumbled onto this colorful cabin. Took many photos of this photographic gem and shared a post here on the Hog. A few weeks back, we were in the area and I revisited the cabin. The evening light was not particularly good, mainly an overcast grey sky. Still, the cabin is a charmer with the colorful sandstone construction surrounded by cottonwood trees!! BYW, underneath all the timber piled on the floor is a basement trapdoor...couldn't get the wife to go in!!
