who's buying all the old photo gear?

I don't mind the click/clop of the mirrored camera. I have several and all have their purpose. I attach a lens and that baby stays on. It is easy enough to grab the second camera, or have my husband make his own photos. (He has the better eye for composition) I can spend the money on mirrorless, but right now it seems to be a high speed race to high priced extinction for one model after another.

When I find an extra $35K laying around, I might venture into mirrorless, but until then, I'll take the money and enjoy a couple of two week cruises or some such other vacay. I hope everyone will keep posting their photos so we can enjoy their new cameras, too.

We make memories of our trips and nothing more (although we made a montage of container ships as they passed in the Panama Canal, and made many of his customers very happy to see them)

Ditto: "Most of my camera gear is purchased used, these days."

The whole concept of buying on the used market has HUGE merit. Here's why:

1) Let someone else take the "depreciation hit." As soon as a new item goes out the door, its value drops by 15% to 20% or more. It is a bargain to the next buyer, especially if it is gently used.

2) The "Bathtub Curve." This is a phenomenon of product life: Most product failures occur either during the initial few uses, or at "end of design life." In between is a relatively long period of normal use without incident. Most products that work properly past the first hundred hours of usage will make it to the engineered end of design life, or "mean time before failure." So chances are EXCELLENT that a properly vetted, used or refurbished product will last a very long time. Not only are you getting a lower purchase cost, but the initial owner took MOST of the risk of failure!

3) Warranties. Many used equipment dealers provide 90-, or 180-day, or six month warranties on used equipment in good or better shape. They know the bathtub curve, and figure they'll take an occasional hit to their insurance when a product comes back.

So if you HAVE money for a new item, go ahead and buy it, if you are still not convinced. The people who can't afford that new thing, and the people who CAN afford it but want more utility from their money, will buy it used, when the first buyer has remorse, or loses interest.

I THOROUGHLY research anything I buy that I intend to rely upon for a period of a year or more. I don't buy "lemon" products. I want hassle-free, low maintenance, user-friendly, reliable, long-lived products that I can count on to do what I ask of them. I'll gladly let others take the arrows in the back for being card-carrying members of the "bleeding edge" club. Most of my camera gear is purchased used, these days. I'll buy a current model that's been out a year to 18 months and seen retail price cuts. But I'll get one in "like new" or "excellent plus" shape. It isn't any less useful to me than a new one.

As everyone is trading in/selling for the new mirrorless cameras and lenses,
Why are these being bought up?

I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to the latest technology but that is exactly what got me to move up. Not to mirror less but to a full frame. I had a Cannon Rebel Xti for the longest time but couldn’t afford full frame. Thanks everyone for trading in good quality older gear for guys like me. Got into a Cannon 5D Mark II and a 24-70mm f/4 L lens for around $1000, works for me.👍

Question…. Why do you need THE box or boxes when selling good used photography gear. Isn’t the value in the gear not the box.

When you are selling something people want the like new experience.

Bill… then why not sell the item at the original purchase price too. You get both the like new experience and the original box included

All due respect, but I haven't seen many bargain basement prices yet. They may be coming. That's one reason why I'm not anxious to shift over to MILC yet.

Perhaps. But the amounts being offered by buyers have gotten quite low, if they are still buying or trading at all. Lots of equipment has been taken in trade already for Z9s. It's not going out nearly as fast as it came in. So I'd expect offers to be notably lower for items proposed as trade for Z8s. Perhaps resale prices will come down to encourage quicker sale. Maybe offered amounts will eventually go back up after inventories drop somewhat. But for now, I'd expect the spread between buying and selling prices to remain pretty large.

There it is.

And mirrorless cameras can also utilize DSLR lenses.

No it's the box. ;)

The expectation is that gear with boxes and manuals has been better cared for and will be in better shape, thus the buyer will pay a higher price.

Why only with boxes?
