I too have a couple of hundred cd's. It would pain me to get rid of any of them. So, we got a portable cd player, (yes, they still make them to plug into your tv, and every now and again, we play them. Also, I have 4 discs pertaining to our trip to Israel. The person who shot them was a pro videographer, and shot the entire 18 days trip, and edited them down to 4 cd's, I am going to try to transfer them to my computer for future viewing.

Unfortunately, everything is not available at your fingertips. If it is available, you'll probably have to pay for it. That's happened to me with both songs and movies. I have about a thousand CDs on a large wall shelf. I also have hundreds of DVDs, both commercial and homemade. If I want to listen or watch, it won't cost me a cent.

Before you dump those CDs or donate them to the library, you might want to see if they are available online for free. Audio files don't take up much room as digital files.

I kept mine and still play them.

I have about a thousand CDs on a wall shelf. It protrudes about the width of a CD, so it's not an inconvenience. I guess I should copy them to a hard drive - someday. I have hundreds of songs on tiny flash drives that I play in my car. No more trying to find a good radio station.

Be careful what you download or how you copy them to a PC. Either may end up going over as mp3's which happen to usually be a few bits shy of the 16 bits that is on the CD. If you want inferior copies or can no longer tell the difference then no problem but if quality audio is desired then you need the CDs or at least make sure that when you copy they are still 16 bit.

MP3 is lossy, but are WAV and other formats universal enough that they will play on anything? Is the MP3 loss significant?

Carefully go through them and see if there are some that are not mainstream, that you might have trouble finding on streaming sites. I have a couple of CDs by Anne Hills and while there are a few of her songs on Youtube, not all the ones I like are readily findable. Those songs and maybe some you would like to have instant access to, download, then take all your CDs and donate them. The money you could make from them is not worth your time and trouble. A few may have personal significance like they were given by a friend or loved one -- those you may want to keep as CDs. I still have the first LP purchased in the fall of 1968. It is the "Time Peace" album by the Rascals and I have no plans to ever part with that album.

I store them with my 5 1/4" floppies! 🤪 (And my 72 RPM records!)

I'm always searching the CDs at the Thrift Stores, looking for music that I enjoy but mostly looking for ones that I can resell. I've made some pretty good money from people who donate their collections. And the CDs don't always have to be old. My daughter-in-law just sold a 2008 Taylor Swift for $74.

One of these days, you'll have to download a virtual TV to watch a movie.

We put all of ours in a Sony CDP-CX235 player. Holds 200 CDs and works like a charm.

I kept only those that were not available on iTunes music or other streaming source. The rest I gave to a charity shop that was delighted to have them.

There is a software called Exact Audio Copy that will rip the CD’s into virtually any audio format, FLAC, MP3, WAV, etc. Since FLAC is lossless, but takes up much less space than WAV, that is the format I copy them to. I don’t bother with MP3 due to it in being lossy.

MP3 has another problem. It is not compatible with gapless playback. There are a number of CDs where tracks blend into one another, particularly those with classical music, one movement into the next, even though the track number may change on a CD player. With MP3s, there is always a hesitation between tracks. Annoying.

I ripped all of mine to my computer, then distributed them to the various thrift stores around town. While at the store, I peruse their collection and buy the gems I find. I eliminate any possible duplicates because everything is stored on my 256 gig telephone so I can listen anywhere. I then repeat the whole process. Currently well over 7,000 tunes with lots of storage left.

Have stored over last 20 years around 1500 CDs and 2000 LP ( transfered to CD in dedicated CD burner) into iTunes intially on PC then Mac.
Now iTunes is replaced by “ Music” in Mac
Of course on external HD . Cataloged by genre, author.
Problem has been than more than once “Music” looses tracks or whole albums. Sometimes can find using search.
Do not trust this software anymore. Wish I had started with another one but now too late to discard CDs or CDs of LPs.
When I find holes in collection;use CD to reload
Anyone else has had problems with iTunes or Mac Music eating up tracks?
