What have you done with all your old cd’s?

In attempting to clean out the house, I came across a couple of boxes of cd’s, probably a couple hundred all in cases and in good shape. In this day of internet music at your fingertips, is it worth it to download them onto the computer? Or, should I just try to sell them or give them away? What have you done with yours?

If you're not listening to the CD's, would you listen to the music if you transferred it to your computer? If no, then just get rid of them if they're taking up room in your house. My son took a lot of mine. You can take them to Goodwill. You can try to sell them, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. They might be worth something in the distant future as collectibles, but who knows?

If you don't listen to them, get rid of them. We recently moved and downsized. I took them all to a store that sells used CDs.(From the 60s and 70s) I think I got $2 a piece form some of them. They liked my husband's old Blues ones better than my Rock and Rolls ones. I was not going to haul them back home so I told them to donate the rest to someplace. I think they were going to go to a Vets home.

My CD problem was a little bigger -- somewhere around 2500 CDs accumulated over many decades. I long ago copied them all to computer hard drive and cataloged them in a database so I no longer played the original CDs. I play them from the hard drive copy (right now listening to Dvorak string quartet No. 6). But I was reluctant to part with them because having the original made my copies at least in my mind legal. I didn't like the idea of having thousands of illegal copies.

So the CDs were all boxed up and stored in the spare bedroom. It was a lot of boxes. My wife wanted them gone. I finally realized a couple things. The CDs were pretty much worthless and nobody cared anymore if I had ripped them all to a hard drive and/or had the originals. At one point I looked into getting a booth at one of those antique malls and pricing them all at $1.00 apiece. I'd have been lucky to break even. We have a used CD store in the area and I went over with a stack of them. They wouldn't take 1/2 of them and offered my between 10 cents and two bits for the rest. I considered Goodwill but figured most of them would be pitched.

In the meantime my wife continued to want those boxes gone. One day last year she was reading posts on the Internet site Nextdoor and someone noted they were in their car listening to Samuel Barber on a CD. My wife recognized the two words "Barber" and "CD" and sent the guy a message asking if he would be interested in more CDs. He responded very enthusiastically and said he'd love them. He didn't know how many she was talking about at that point. But my wife invited him to stop by and meet me.

I liked the guy and thought he would sincerely appreciate the music. He was a school teacher and said he would share them with his students as well. When I told him how many he said he'd take them. I knew there were some disks that I couldn't part with no matter what and told him I'd have to sort them but we could arrange to have him pick up a few hundred once every week to ten days until they were gone. I got it down now to three boxes -- between 200 and 300 CDs that I can't part with no matter what. Now I tell my wife I'm keeping them for our grandson who won't know what they are when I finally give them to him.

I have over 260 CDs in a floor stand......
All have been imported to iTunes on the desktop,
and are backed up.
I've yet to figure out what to do with them as each car has a CD player and I have a Boom Box with CD/Cassette still.

I have ~1100 CDs Ripped to my desktop and copied to a 128GB Micro-SD card in my Sansa Clip+ with the Rockbox firmware installed. When I get "enough" new, I'll copy them as well and make a new playlist using PC3 and a text editor. My wife isn't happy with them all. but I have prevailed at this point.

You can give them to me. I like the CD for music best.

Be careful what you download or how you copy them to a PC. Either may end up going over as mp3's which happen to usually be a few bits shy of the 16 bits that is on the CD. If you want inferior copies or can no longer tell the difference then no problem but if quality audio is desired then you need the CDs or at least make sure that when you copy they are still 16 bit.

I would either put them on my iPad or my iPhone and then probably donate them to the library.
