Um, today's "Law and Order" is about as political as a show can get.

Agreed, I watch the old ones.

My wife and I are on our second time through viewing the series Doc Martin. This time on Acorn TV. If you've never seen it, or all of it, since PBS didn't air the last 2-3 seasons, I highly recommend subscribing to Acorn if for no other reason than to watch an hour of Doc Marin each evening. You'll go to bed better for it.

So here they are. My top five and beyond.

Doc Martin.....Great cast, humor, drama, continuing story line, and a rolling cast of interesting characters. Must be watched to the end of the series.
Law and Order.....Great drama which stayed true and didn't become political
The Honeymooners.....The template for all comedy series to follow. Outstanding cast of characters.
Friends.....Better writing and continuity of story than Seinfeld
Seinfeld.....Much ado about nothing, which is the point, but continually, nothing. Friends progresses
Mary Tyler Moore Show.....Outstanding, outstanding casting
Dick VanDyke Show.....Where we first came to love Mary, another great cast

Ok, there were so many other great shows like The Twilight Zone, etc. These are my tops. My big point? Don't miss watching all 10 seasons of Doc Martin. It's one show that you can sit down with your wife or husband and enjoy together.
My wife and I are on our second time through viewi... (show quote)

Doc Martin is an excellent suggestion. My wife and I subscribe to both Acorn and Britbox. Both are well worth the money. We can recommend The Tower, DCI Banks, Happy Valley and Morse.

Have to disagree about L&O. They turned extremely political in a number of episodes. No New York prosecutor can hijack a case from another state to prosecute that case in New York. McCoy also prosecuted a number of crimes which aren't on New York's books, or which poach Federal jurisdiction. The one where the savings bank owner laundered money for the Russians isn't within New York's purview is a prime example. I also grew tired of Jack McCoy's self-righteousness.

I assume we're raving about David Suchet's Poirot and Joan Hickson's Miss Marple, both of which are easily re-watchable masterpieces in all their episodes. (I've seen several others play Poirot and at least one other Miss Marple, but they are pale shadows by comparison - IMHO.)

And a +1 for the Hutton/Chaykin Nero Wolfe series. Too bad it only lasted 2 seasons. I read a lot of the books ~50 years ago and nothing about the characters or the brownstone surprised me when the TV series showed up many years later. (And thankfully, to somebody who knows something about revolvers, they didn't try to come up with a Marley revolver with a safety, an extremely rare feature on a revolver.)

All in the family. Was a great show that couldn't be made today. Can you image making Blazing Saddles today.

If I expanded my list out to ten, I would have to include a couple of westerns at least. There are about four on my list to choose from: Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Wagon Train, Bonanza, and the Rifleman. The first two, I think, were my favorites. My Mom loved Wagon Train.

Everybody loved Dobie Gillis and, ofc, Thalia Meninger!!

Have Gun, Will Travel? And how can we overlook Rowan and Martin's Laugh In?

For old Westerns don't forget Wanted Dead or Alive, starring Steve McQueen.

Put MASH at the top of your list.

Mash is the only sitcom I put on my list because I can't stand the laugh tracks. Once you pick up on the way they repeat about every sixth or eighth laugh, it drives me nuts. "The Office" didn't use laugh tracks and was much better in my opinion. I really do not need the show producers to tell me when to laugh. Someone told me that they remove the laugh tracks in the UK before airing American sitcoms. I don't know if that is true, but if so, bully for them!
