JPEGs can be edited in LR and PS or another editor. However not like raw images can. There's a lot less that's possible trying to edit a JPEG as compared with editing raw data. AND, if the camera has already screwed up the JPEG you may be unable to mitigate the damage done.

I think the best way to think about raw is that it is akin to a "negative" of the film days. You can edit a raw image any number of times to turn it into a jpeg, but the raw never changes, like a negative never changes.

And editing a jpeg file will always decrease the quality of a photo since the compression action will always degrade things, however slight that degradation may be.

I realize that the choice between RAW and JPEG has been debated ad nauseam, but I think that this video is perhaps the best and most balanced explanation of the pros and cons of each: https://youtu.be/9tH_DwpZvKY. Simon d'Entremont is an excellent teacher. For my part, I shoot JPEG Fine* and for special -- once in a lifetime -- shoots, RAW+JPEG, and in both cases, try to get it right in camera. It works for me; YMMV.

I agree. That said can JPEGs be used in Lightroom or Photoshop like RAW images can. I heard no.

JPEGs can definitely be edited in any post processing software - the issue is that there is far less flexibility in editing since all of the various parameters that you selected when shooting the photos are baked into those files. For example, if you set an incorrect white balance you can tweak it somewhat in a JPEG, but only in a minor way. With the RAW file you can completely reset the white balance as if you had it correct in the first place. Did you shoot your JPEG with the camera set to black and white? If so, the color data is gone, so you can’t decide after the fact to change to a color profile. With RAW, it doesn’t matter which profile was set when you captured the image and you can change your mind after the fact. Those are but a few of the differences.

I am a Fuji shooter and I love the the Fuji film simulations/recipes. These are Jpegs straight out of the camera.

Yea, they have their reasons, for them.
It's an individual volition.
Not a band wagon I want to get on.

I usually shoot RAW because I like to do a lot of editing and want to have as much attitude with the image as possible. However, there are some instances where I may just be shooting some event or family gathering and not really planning or desireing to do a lot of editing, in which case I'll shoot .Jpeg. It's circumstantial.

To save the trouble of deciding, I shoot both.
Best of both worlds.
For me.

Each photographer can select the image type he/she needs, at the time of capture or during post processing.

If you see very little difference (not the same as zero difference) then maybe raw is not for you.
I don't have a problem with the space. Memory is cheap.

Exactly, today memory is relatively cheap. Very affordable 2T HDDs. And for those who need it, 2T SD Cards. Not sure of the level of high capacity CF cards as none of my cameras use them. Personally I am fine with 32GB SD cards. About once or twice per year I archive my finished images to pairs of portable external HDDs.

Fuji is nearly a whole different animal. I own a Fujifilm camera. But I still shoot the Fuji Raw as I have no familiarity with Fujifilm film characteristics being a former Kodak film shooter.

Shooting in JPEG is nothing to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.

Have you added anything new?

Just wondering.
