Let me say right off that I expect people in reply that this has been going on as long as there have been cars and highways. Maybe, but I hadn't seen much of it till last week.

On my 300-mile ride to L. I. and back last week, I noticed a new trend during traffic jams on highways. When there is an entrance to a highway, there is usually a short stretch of lane that lets cars get up to speed before blending in. I saw something new and annoying last week. When traffic was stop-and-go by one of those speed-up lanes, cars behind me would move into that lane and shoot forward. Then they would force their way into the waiting line of traffic. To the casual driver, it would seem like they were just cars entering the highway, and they would be willing to let them in.

This was not a one-time event. It happened every time traffic was stopped by a speed-up lane, and several cars would pull out and race ahead.

All the time.
They must feel so good about being stuck in the same traffic 5 cars ahead of where they were....
It means so much to them.

What I get a kick out of is seeing a car move from lane to lane as the traffic moves ahead one car-length. Back and forth, back and forth. A few minutes later, I slowly creep by him as my lane moves ahead.

I don't know what movie it was, probably a Mission Impossible. Tom Cruise was at a party, and he didn't want to get involved in conversation. When a man approached him and asked what he did for a living, he said he studied traffic flow and began to talk about it. The man quickly moved away.

This happens all the time when I am driving to work on The Brooklyn Queens Expressway and the East River Drive also known as the FDR. Besides that, many drive at full speed on the shoulder.

I did have an evil thought.
I would like to Xerox a thousand or so $1 bills. Obviously, just one side and fold them in half. While my wife is driving, I would toss these counterfeited bills out the passenger side window to force these fools to stop short. My wife calls me an EVIL BUGGER! I love it.

Obviously Counterfeited Bills

I've driven on those roads many times, but not in a few years. Driving has definitely gotten more aggressive. It was very convenient living on Long Island when I want to go into the City. I used to drive over 12,000 miles a year, but I've gotten it down to 5 - 6k. My son does over 25k.

New York City driving is a newest challenge. I can say how many times I wish I was driving an unmarked police car. In one day I could write at least 50 tickets. What a great way for the city to get a money grab!!

I don't let them in either, but someone else always does.

Same thing happens here in NZ Jerry.
We have road works all over the country these days, repairing slips and pot holes after a season of floods.
Drivers ignore the signs indicating the road is going down to one lane and speed up in the narrowing lane until they have to force their way in to the remaining lane.
They burn gas, offend others, risk a smash. All to get wherever maybe 10 seconds quicker.
Dumb 🙄

Nup. Just got home from collecting my granddaughter at the local airport. 50km return trip
Pouring with rain, slippery conditions.
Heaps of idiots still here. 🙄
Next time the planet tilts them your way, please give the planet just a little shake to empty the dregs. 👍

Long Island parkways have become the fast and the furious. High speed reckless driving, mostly by younger drivers and motorcycles. That police cannot or will not catch them. I try not to drive at night because of these morons.

One time, counted 20 plus cars doing this in fifteen minutes at the NJ turnpike entrance to the Holland Tunnel. It's a feed from to approaches, that leads to several traffic lights. The jumping ahead in the shoulder just makes it worse for the rest of us, and eventually someone had to let them in, to prevent accidents.
