I love that line from "Jaws" about a "bigger boat." I like carrying a small camera that fits into a case on my belt, but this Sony WX9 falls short. There's no viewfinder, and the picture quality leaves something to be desired unless there is lots of light. I think I'll start looking for a small camera. My cell phone is small, but it's a phone, not a camera. It doesn't have a viewfinder! 😂

In many situations, it's not practical to carry a DSLR or a mirrorless. I'm restricted to only two arms and two shoulders. I hope Human 2.0 comes better equipped.

I have carried the fugi finpix and olympus tg waterproof cameras when I needed small and exposed shooting where i didnt want to carry my dslr (mirrorless now). They take surprisingly good pictures and i dont have to worry about getting them wet. They were also great for skiing because they can take impact and they fit fine in my skijacket. I have used several models over the last 10 years. I will say that the latest iPhone does a surprisingly good job.

I was in the same boat but discovered the discontinued Nikon 1V1. The whole Nikon 1 series is great!

If I'm not mistaken, the HX99 has a pop-up viewfinder that might seem flimsy. Panasonic makes the Lumix DCZS80 which is similar with a solid viewfinder. It might be a shade larger. I love mine. For a model with a much larger sensor, the DMC-ZS100 or -ZS200D is available, 'tho with a lesser zoom.

I bought a Lumix DC-ZS80 after reading some comments on here. I take it to concerts where they don't allow cameras with a removable lens. I really like the long optical zoom (30x, 24-720mm) and it shoots great video (4K). The photos I take are quite noisy from pushing the ISO at an indoor concert, but a little Topaz DeNoise goes a long way.

Here's a photo from a recent Eric Johnson show. We were in the 5th row.

I use a (now older) Nikon P7800 with EVF. 1" sensor, shoots RAW if desired.

Thanks, everyone. I'll look at these. I think I might start using my old Canon Elph SD800IS again. It has a viewfinder.

Spending $500 - $1,000 for the convenience of a small, occasional camera is not in my plans.

Jerry,

Why did you start this topic?

Im just curious where are you and what are you carrying that precludes carrying a small format camera on a strap or in a backpack?

A sell phone camera sounds like the obvious solution to your dilemma. Modern cell phone cameras are better than older dedicated cameras.

Thanks, but I've decided to stick with my SD800IS. It's small, and it's paid for.

I always forget to mention that there is also the DCZS70 which is a minor step down from the DCZS80 for less $. You can compare them here:

It seems many of you are ignoring OP's preference for having a viewfinder.

I'm sort of surprised this is still an issue.

I consider my Sony A7RIV...to be tiny...and it is.

You mean your Speed Graphic doesn't fit into a pouch?
Maybe if you remove the flash bulb mechanism....

It was very plain.

My camera is tiny.

I cannot imagine going smaller.

iPhone 14 plus has three lenses, 45 MP, RAW images and great editor. It has taken over that role from my Nikon Z50. Keeping the Z50/for wildlife with Nikon 200-400 and 1.4 TC: up to 1000 mm effective.
