Any bets on how many pages this will go? I bet at least 20.

Only up to nine pages at this time. Not going to read them all since my mind is made up.

Mirror, mirror on the wall who takes better pictures for all.
I bet nobody can tell the differences between a DSLR picture and a mirrorless one. So the bottom line is if you want to spend the money don’t let anyone stop you. Otherwise you can make endless arguments for either camera.
I still have my Leica F rangefinder, is anyone willing discuss if I should trade it in for a mirrorless camera?

Do you have a picture of your Leica F?

Probably not, if I can find one it’s in B&W.
But I never had to worry about a dead battery, no mirrors to flop up and down and the rangefinder worked flawlessly, as long as I had time to focus and my f stops were not always perfect. But I had a lot more fun using that little box, because I had to think before taking a picture.

You mean a Leica IIIf as I have never seen a Leica F.

Yes a IIIf, thanks for the correction. It has an f 2.0 50mm lens that collapses and makes a very compact camera.

For most, especially the viewer, the end result is what matters.
For others, it's the journey to the end result that matters.

I should add that I don’t like the “Mirrorless” name. It sounds like a DSLR that is missing something. Whoever coined that name needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with something more appealing. Nobody named the DSLR “film-less”. I can suggest: “rangefinder-less”
.
With a new name, we will no longer have such extensive discussions.

I have both a mirrorless and two DSLRs. The advantages of mirrorless are as stated. What you see is what you get vs the guesswork about what I'll get when looking through an optical view finder. The advances in AF are fantastic. But there's really no observable difference in image quality between mirrorless and a DSLR. If I were in the market for a new camera, I'd most likely buy mirrorless but from my years of hands on experience with both, there's no reason I can see to ditch a perfectly good DSLR just because it's not mirrorless.

I have used the best of pro SLRs and DSLRs for over 40+ years. And I have used some of the best mirrorless gear since 2017.

There are many more reasons someone might choose mirrorless than just the ones you list. In reality all the major camera makers are putting all their best, most advanced technology, including their best image sensors into their latest mirrorless lineups, meaning better dynamic range, better more accurate colors, better resolution and detail, better low light and high ISO performance with less image noise, stacked sensors with little to no rolling shutter in electronic shooting. All these do affect image quality.

No one that is totally happy with what their DSLR gives them , need more over to mirrorless. But I am certainly happy I did, and my image quality is even better now than the best from my DSLRs. DSLRs will still make excellent photos in the right hands , but for me personally, I would never go back to even the best DSLRs for my professional and personal work. You are free to feel otherwise for your photographic needs.

I would never ask you to ditch your DSLRs. But interestingly the Major News Services around the world did just that. They all ditched their DSLRs and went mirrorless for all their staff still photographers and staff videographers worldwide.

Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannett media including USA Today all ditched their Canon and Nikon DSLRs and went exclusively to Sony Mirrorless for all their staffers, worldwide. AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the mirrorless Nikon Z9 and they use Z9 for all their staffers worldwide.

Your photo needs may be very different than those of news and sports photographers . Here is what these News Services said about why they made to move to mirrorless in the past 24 months.

Use what you love, and be happy. For me that is my mirrorless gear. Thank you to all my SLRs and DSLRs for decades of great photos.

Cheers and best to you all.

It is missing something - the mirror {the “reflex”}

“Rangefinderless” may also be confusing because some members would argue about the definition of “rangefinder” since most do have some way of determining distance, and most SLRs have an actual rangefinder, a circle-and-line device, where the two lines must match if the object is in focus - there might be some discussion about the digital variant, but digital is the main difference between the two, and there have been discussions at the Pentax Forum about adding the same functionality to DSLRs, so that would just add more confusion.

You’ll notice I always refer to them as “MILC” -“Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera”. “DSLR” is a correct description” - “Digital Single Lens Reflex” {camera}; with the same mindset, “MILC” would be described as “DSLN” - “Digital Single Lens Nonreflexive” - but that would also be confusing {“Reflex” does refer to the function of the mirror}.

Because if you visit the UHH forum regularly you should have known what kind of cameras he uses.

Perhaps u4ea just recognizes uselessly verbose, essay length posts at a glance and just skips over them. Thus he could be a regular reader of UHH forums but know nothing at all about our several self-anointed "gurus".
