As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've seen a lot of beautiful cars, but for my money, this one ranks #1.

It's a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR. Mercedes brought it over from their corporate museum to show it exclusively at the Amelia Island Concours.

It is a stunning automobile. Two questions. One: is the little scoop in front of the driver's windshield for cooling the driver? Number two: what is the protrusion on the right forward side of the hood? I can't make it out.

For me the photography part of the photo are great, angles, lighting, composition are excellent. But being B&W, not sure i’d agree with your “ most beautiful …..” I can’t really see its details. B&W is too stark.

It looks like a rearview mirror to me.

No, I see the rearview mirror Bruce, but I was wondering about the scoop directly in front of the little driver's windshield. It seems like it would be to direct cooling air into the cockpit.

I do like #3. Taking the time to get a little lower, not full frontal, but just to show some uppermost features is perhaps my favourite view for cars like this.

Thanks for the visit. I appreciate your input.

You are right about the scoop....cool the driver. That protrusion, as far I can tell, is another light. Probably a light better suited for fog. Usually, when Mercedes sends over one of their crown jewels, it is accompanied by a whole slew of folks. I didn't see any factory guys when I was shooting the car or I would have gotten a definitive answer to that feature.

In this case, just pretend that it is not a B&W shot. That car, being a very light silver color, would have appeared virtually the same in a color shot. As I mentioned to another member, the color version was inferior because of the severe mottled lighting. In this case, you can focus more on the features of the car...the lines and the details.

My mistake papa, I guess I was looking at the wrong picture you were referring to, and I do believe the scoop is to bring air into the driver. I believe yesterday’s post had a similar car. It wasn’t a convertible, but it had the scoop to put air to the driver because it was notoriously hot inside.

What no one has mentioned is the fact that a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR coupe recently sold for $142 million
Yes you read that right, $142 MILLION

Great B&W set, Mamba, but in my opinion the Jaguar XKE is the most beautiful car of all.

You were only 2mil from immortality!
I bid the full $142 but then they required a $5000 deposit.
