As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've seen a lot of beautiful cars, but for my money, this one ranks #1.

It's a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR. Mercedes brought it over from their corporate museum to show it exclusively at the Amelia Island Concours.

Now that's a sweet ride

What is that part on the trunk?

It's an aerodynamic device to reduce drag and buffeting of the racing helmet. Hard to decide which is a more beautiful design, the GullwingCoupe or the Roadster pictured here.

That part serves as a headrest, if needed. I think it's primarily there to enhance the aerodynamics of the car at high speeds. I'm not sure about this but I suspect it also hides the gas filler pipe.

Thanks for looking in.

You are right about the aerodynamic consideration

The car is silver colored. Shooting B&W can sometimes save the day. The lighting on the car was severely mottled because of the heavy tree coverage. Getting a suitable image in color was not in the cards. Shooting in B&W negated, to a large degree, the pronounced uneven lighting.

Thank you, sir. I think you can appreciate my response above to another member as to why I shot this car in B&W.

Nice photos of that gorgeous car!! I like the B&W to show off the lines and curves of the design....something that is genuinely lacking in todays vehicles.

You make a very good point. There times when a color shot would be fine. But I'll chose B&W because of the very reasons you mention. There are also times when I'm out shooting barns and such and I'll want to express the antiquity feel to the subject. I'll go B&W in a heartbeat.

I don't know who said it but a photographer said B&W is for when color gets in the way of your story. It's not an exact quote but that is what it means.

Car owners will spend thousands on great paint jobs which really make people take notice but when you want to see the art the car designer created, B&W is the way to go; lines and curves take the forefront. As you mentioned, barns and other old buildings, tools, mechanical and some portraits are best in B&W to tell the story. I love B&W but it's not for every photo. It can show so many things that color hides. That's just my opinion!!

I do like #3. Taking the time to get a little lower, not full frontal, but just to show some uppermost features is perhaps my favourite view for cars like this.
