Well, in his case, no electricity meant no radio, and no TV, so no way for comparisons to be made. Also, his pappy was a 'baccy farmer. (See above comments on farming.)
I figger Steve was born around WWII, to parents who had lived through the Great Depression; things would have been tight, anyway. And when all your neighbors are in the same condition...

Flashback Moment: As I was sitting on the porch of the rented house, the owner came up on his tractor. He looked over the 40 acre field attached to the house.
He mused: "My pappy planted corn here. He also planted cotton. Then he planted 'baccy. I might put in corn....or cotton...or 'baccy. But I don't know."
His people owned the whole property since the French Indian War. Even half of the acreage was sold to the USA to make up part of what became Ft Bragg.
Being rich? PC enjoyed doing his farmwork, just like his pappy. One wouldn't know about him being rich. He was a regular farmer.
For almost an hour, that was the gist of our one sided conversation. But then, that was PC's way. And drove away without giving out any indication of what he decided to put in.
