My rule is simple: To get a small fortune, start with a large fortune and then pursue a hobby like photography, car racing, or the like

Or like we used to say when I was a farmer. To make a million dollars in farming, start with two million.

Kind of like how to retire from trucking with a small fortune. Go into trucking with a large fortune.

Start your own business....opt out of SS...take that SS money and invest it yourself.
Then invest as you would anyways...use the tax laws.

Doesn't take too long.

Agreed! A wise person once said "No one on their deathbed wished they were still at work."

Except that guy caught on the Kisscam with his side girlfriend while wife watched the game at home.

Jerry,
I did the same, took the money and ran and never looked back. What good is the money if you wake up dead?

You get a part in the next zombie movie? At least a "crawl on" role.

Me? I'll be dead for eternity once I do die.

The easiest way to retire a millionaire is to start out with two million dollars and end up with a million dollars left when you retire.

I just checked with my bank manager and he sent an email to tell me that right at this moment, I have enough cash in my deposit account, to last me the rest of my life. I was elated and stopped there for a moment to cherish that moment, then I went on to read the last line. He went on to say, "However, that's assuming that you die by tomorrow night"

Yeah, but they kept asking me for my "almanack"! ๐Ÿ˜‰

There is a gent in my church who grew up on a farm here in the Piedmont of NC 70+ years ago. No electricity, running water was how you got it into the house before it froze in the bucket, and open-air outhouses (one path for the boys, another for the girls). He says, "Yeah, we were poor. But! We didn't know it!"

This is my 24th year of retirement. I got out as soon as I could - to the day! Life is too short to be taking orders from strangers (bosses).

Iโ€™ve been retired almost 35 years from my principal job and have enjoyed every minute of it even though I worked 3 years part time for a consulting firm and had my own consulting business for another 5 years (while I weaned the dozen or so clients who left with me). Both of which helped me put away a substantial nest egg.

I would guess that the key to 'retiring comfortably' is:

Reduce your expectations.

It used to be that the only constant in the universe was change. The new constant is Inflation.

My wife & I worked 2 and 3 jobs and saved as much as we could in an investment account. After 25 - 30 years, it will grow. We are not rich, but are comfortable in retirement.

My Dad was a teacher and coach. My Mom stayed home and took care of us, the house and cooked up the best food I've ever had. We always had plenty of food. They bought a '57 Chevy and then a '65 Chevy, and yet still contributed to an investment account. They also built a new house in '60. When all was said and done, their estate was worth $700,000. Not bad for a school teacher and a home maker. The 90's didn't hurt, though!!
