Don't let the photographer you were yesterday stop you from buying a new camera tomorrow.

Buy it for me Paul and I will be a new man.

The amazing thing about photography is that average, random, unremarkable people can own the best equipment.
Your posts are helpful, often humorous, or ironic, but not condescending. What happened here?

I will share this in each of the current Z8 threads here in UHH.

My longtime friend and fellow top pro Cliff Mautner, a Nikon Ambassador and Nikon youtube content creator, had this to say about the Z8:

" Photographer friends- I truly didn’t think anything could surpass the Z 9. It’s been my workhorse since the day I received one. I’ll spare you the “specs” report, but I’d always wished the Z 9 could be more compact. After 40 years of gear on my shoulders, carrying full sized flagship cameras have taken their toll. After my first 12 hour gig with the Z 9, I’d wished it was just…. Smaller. Enter the Nikon Z 8! I’m truly stoked to have all of the Z 9’s features, plus a few others, in a smaller form factor. THIS is everything I’ve needed in a camera body. You can learn more about the camera with the link in this post. A few of my fellow Nikon ambassadors did a phenomenal job with producing assets for this campaign."

Cheers and best to you all.
I will share this in each of the current Z8 thread... (show quote)
A good ambassador is able to tout the latest product while not degrading the other products. Your friend does a good job of that.

Only $4000. Wow, I’ll order two.
Oh boy I just let out a real long fart so I’m over it now. I guess I’ll just keep the camera I’ve got.
Bruce.

So purchase 3 of them, or more; save enough money and you’ll be rich!!! [/sarcasm]

Preordered mine. I gave a few great pieces of glass but I am looking forward to building my Z line.
While it’s true that sensor evolution makes camera bodies more significant than with film, glass is still the 2nd biggest factor in image quality. The most significant factor is the 6” behind the camera. The third factor is the camera body.

Think of it this way, the light has to pass thru the lens before it hits the sensor. The lens has the greatest effect on the light. The sensor simply records the light that it receives.

So given an older camera body with good glass vs a new camera body with old or cheap glass, which will have better IQ?

That’s easy for me, I will take the better glass over a new body. Because photography is first and foremost about the optics.

But camera manufacturers make profits selling camera bodies. So it’s good when people rush to buy the new bodies because it helps keep the companies in business. And new bodies are fun for the buyer too. It’s all good.

But I’m saving my $$ for good Z glass and Looking forward to the day I can ditch the FTZ converter.

ha ha ha that’s right. My girlfriend likes to tell me she saved money buying 3 of __, fill in the blank. But you didn’t need that babe so you spent more money than not buying them. Ok I don’t say that out loud. I try not to even think that too loud. “That’s great babe” is the only acceptable answer. Be supportive and don’t judge.

Similar thing here I think with us and our gear.

That is the opposite of what I regularly hear at the Pentax Forum, where many members say that companies sell camera bodies as a means of selling lenses.

We know that around 140 million Canon EF lenses were produced between 1987 and 2019. That's 140,000,000 individual lenses, just from one company. Change the camera mount and you can generate new lens sales, but there's going to be more churn (sales) in bodies, especially within the UHH body-centric community that will willingly buy one 24MP body after another after another.

There is synergy between the two. Once a photographer has a set of lenses she is much less likely to switch brands. Two phrases come to mind here.

“You have a relationship with the camera body but you marry the lens.”

And

“Camera bodies come and go but find a lens you love and keep it forever.”
