I'm so "loyal" to my Canon 5DII that I want to be sure I'll be using "it" for many years to come. And by "it", I mean even a second Canon 5DII body. So, off to Craig's List I went. I had to be patient, but within a week or so, I found someone wanting to sell a 5DII body. The price was fair, so we picked a local restaurant to meet. We went during a "slow" time (mid-day) and sat at a front window. So, along with our soda orders, I used his camera body and my lenses. I took many shots outside the window and looked at the image. I was happy with it, and bought it.

Oh, I did it a second time. Used Craig's List, met at a restaurant, and I now have two "back up" 5DII bodies.

By the way, I wanted to be sure I was meeting a real person, and a good one. So before we met, I asked several dumb questions, ones I already knew the answers to. If he/she could not answer it well, then scratch that 'seller'. I'll do that to anyone I plan to purchase what they are selling.

Keep in mind, each reseller wants to buy low from you to resell higher to their customers. They all mostly offer what used to be called the bluebook / wholesale (minimum) price for used cars. KEH has an online quote system. We see regular complaints about Adorama who receives your equipment and then lowers their offer, as well as being slow to return the equipment when you reject their lowered offer. Of the three, I prefer KEH.

I've delt with KEH biut your right they buy low to make a profit. M advice sell direct to someone who will pay a fair price.

I put 5 items on Ebay, and scammers tried to buy all five, taking my listing out of service, wanting to make a deal outside the Ebay platform, and the trouble dealing with Ebay to get a delisting wasn't worth it.

Of the various sites that buy used equipment - Adorama, B&H, KEH Camera and others I may not know about - who in most Hoggers opinion is the best, fairest' responsive and trustworthy.

I was told in a phone call by a major photo shop (sorry, I can't recall the name) that they pay 70% of the then market value (the average price for an identical item on Amazon) for items they buy for resale. You send the item to them, they verify the condition and value, and they submit or credit the dollar amount to you. I went to a regional camera store that dealt in used equipment and received more than I was offered by the "big boys." , and sold the items to them.

Has anyone had a bad experience selling or buying on UHH?

Seller may want more than commercial (e.g., KEH, Adorama, MPB) will offer, but may sell for less.

I do buy on e-Bay, but only for books and other things -- never photo. Too much double-talk. Have to research the item and the seller.I have seen people bid more than new once they get wrapped up in bidding competition.

I am not looking for anything, but watch out of curiosity and seems like UHH sales go pretty smooth.

Entering argument: know what you want and what you intend to pay. For seller, realize you are probably selling to an intelligent buyer. Respect both ways.

I bought a lens from a Hogger and everything went good.

70% seems pretty high. Listing an item on ebay means a 15% cut to eBay, plus a 3% cut to PayPal, plus shipping costs.

Additionally, the shop needs to have enough margin to deal with hidden problems with products that may show up between the time it was taken in on trade and when it gets into the buyers hands.

Then factor in that most electronic stuff decreases in value pretty quickly, meaning they've got to be able to move it as fast as possible. This typically means moving it at lower than average price just to keep product moving.

I had KEH lower the offer when they received the equipment. I will not do business with them.

I have bought and sold on UHH with no issues. Folks here seem to be honest and we all have the same mind set. I have used KEH and got reasonable quotes on my older equipment and went with them. I also checked on a quote to sell a tripod and the guy I spoke with said they keep a lot in stock and only offered $40. He suggested I sell it myself and did that here on UHH.

I tend to sell to Robert’s when I do sell. They lowered their price when they actually saw the flash unit - and I accepted their revision. I feel they have a better view of “good”, etc than I do - lots of experience with what buyers notice.
