I have the Panasonic DMZ-FZ300 which is still available, got mine on AMAZON two years ago. I have other digital cameras but this is my favorite. From extreme closeups to distant shots, I have no complaints. A few years ago, this was voted best travel bridge camera for its versatility. The image quality is awesome and no problems with the video mode. I have an Epson XP-970 printer and the prints are top notch. I can print up to 11x17ā€ with no image issues. I am very picky with cameras and not afraid to spend good money on great cameras. I have read some very critical opinions with this camera, but as picky as I am, there was no reason for me to send this camera back! My other cameras are fine, but Iā€™m glad Panasonic came out with this model which is also weatherproof. I bought the extended warranty just in case I accidentally damage it because I definitely will buy it again! Iā€™m completely satisfied! Ran into a friend of mine and got to talking about cameras since he is also an avid photographer and he said he was looking for a travel camera, I told him about the FZ300 and he said he also had checked it out. I told him I had bought it and was completely happy with it. That settled it for him, he bought one.

While the Sony RX 100 VII is probably an excellent choice. I have a Sony RX100 iii, which has a 24-70mm lens. For European travel this is an excellent set-up. Of particular note is that this camera's lens is faster than the other Sony RX 100 series models, being f/1.8-2.8. So, it is better in low light! The 24-70mm lens will render well in the European city and landscape situations. I have been immensely satisfied with mine. Additionally, it has held up well over a number of years.

My experience also. My RX 100 iii has given me excellent performance in my travels. I tried a Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 with more zoom but I found the 24-70mm lens of the RX100 offered much better all-around performance. I took the Panasonic Lumix on my recent trip to Italy, took some good photos, but sold it immediately upon my return. I will not venture out again without my RX100.

The Canon G9x doesn't have a viewfinder and both Canons have very limited zoom range. The Sony RX100 is above your stated budget. While many rave about the Sony, at $1,300 and only 24-200mm equiv lens, I think you would be better served with the Lumix DC-ZS200 at $598 and 24-360mm equiv lens. I am very happy with my ZS100 but would have gotten the 200 if it had been out when I bought it for the larger zoom.

I was waiting for you to mention the ZS100. I love mine.

Stretch your budget to $1500 and get a Sony Rx10IV. I love mine for travel. Use it when your phone camera won't do what you need.

We will be traveling to Italy this summer and I am looking for a new pocket or bridge camera for the trip. I do not want to carry my R6 or R10 and multiple lenses for this trip because we will be going from city to city for 3 weeks touring. I am looking for a small, light pocket or bridge camera of the same or better quality of my R6 or R10 with a hefty zoom, good lens, newest features and the newest chip. I am a Canon user, so that would be my first choice, but am open to suggestions of other brands. The camera must be new, or refurbished and of excellent quality, and I am willing to spend up to $1,000 on it. Any suggestions?

Here is a photo taken with a Sony RX100vii. I did not take the shot in Europe, but rather in Topeka, KS. However, I think it captures some detail in the capitol building.

Do you really need a hefty zoom? In Italy? I would want an UWA, and that's not going to come with a pocket or bridge camera.

I just took delivery of a brand new Sony Cyber Shot DSC HX99 today, $473 from B&H. I have a Nikon D500, and a D5600. I bought a iPhone 14 Pro thinking it would make for a nice camera for vacations when I did not want to lug my DSLR's around. It does take good enough pictures, but I missed having a 'real" camera. It seems to have enough adjustments to keep me interested, and hopefully shooting better than the iPhone. Time will tell, but hey, it's all fun.

Sony RX100vii comes with a Zeiss 24-200mm f2.8-4.5 lens. For a tourist, it will cover most of the bases for most people. Entire camera and lens is the size of a pack of cigarettes.
