I am looking for a small, light pocket or bridge camera of the same or better quality of my R6 or R10 with a hefty zoom, good lens, newest features and the newest chip. I am a Canon user, so that would be my first choice, but am open to suggestions of other brands. The camera must be new, or refurbished and of excellent quality, and I am willing to spend up to $1,000 on it. Any suggestions?

…this just posted…might be just a bit more than you want to spend but what the heck…we only live once and it might lead you on to the path of a used Leica…

Do you have an iPhone? My 14 pro works great.
Heading for Florida in a week and leaving my Nikons behind. Never thought the day would come to that.

Lots of choices, but I suspect any compact would be fine. I like something that fits into a belt case.

I like your response, even though I do not own a smart camera, the quality of the camera phone has really gotten better with phones like the iPhone 13-14 plus the AI apps most people use, with built-in GPS you'll locate without memory where the photo was taken along with the metadata, plus most photos will be viewed on a screen that is more than adequate for display or printing out, plus sharing to cloud storage, plus video.

Having said that I still see the use of a pocket camera or bridge camera if you like me and don't use a smartphone but want easy-to-use cameras with many features. Sony makes a lot of the sensors for other brands so that is not an issue as to image quality. Here are my go to cameras to use when I want to keep it simple, but want shoot that I can print or share with others. These are quite reasonable in price if bought used and easily available on Ebay. Just be sure to buy extra batteries for extended use.

I do not think you will be disappointed with the iPhone 14 Pro. My wife has the iPhone 13 pro and she has taken some spectacular shots. The iphone has a very good editor is you wish to touch up the images you take. But you may also want to try Snapseed editor. It is free and is an excellent in-camera/phone editor app.

Sony HX99, you get a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, accurate pop up viewfinder, articulating rear screen for low level shooting (see second image below) , pop up flash for auto fill, shoots RAW or jpeg, shoots pans four different ways, has HDR, and best of all, fits into a belt pouch, or your pocket allowing you to be HANDS FREE. Did I mention you can get great 20X30 prints. And it will only set you back $400.00. so you will have $600.00 more to take to Italy. The first shot below was my grab shot from Venice.

Love your HX99 shots. Especially from Venice. My wife and I just got back from Venice and we have shots almost like the one you had. When we took the shots of the gondolas, the bridge was so crowded with barely standing room only! But that was on Easter weekend so Venice was really crowded.

Lots of great info! There seems to have been a point reached where lens and sensor technology is sort of maxed for these cameras. I long for a camera the size of my Panasonic DC-ZS 200 with its 1 inch sensor and 24-360 lens lengthened to my Nikon p510’s 1000 reach.

LUMIX ZS200. I have the predecessor model and love its compact size, 1” 20mp sensor, and it has a EVF!

Thank you Jerry, very thorough set of evaluation sites. I think this whole process is getting confusing with so many good choices. I am a fan of Canon, but have had Sony and Panasonic cameras in the past, so still not sure of which way to go. I think though that I will choose one of the one inch sensor models instead of the smaller sensor, but still trying to figure out which one will be best for me. Have you had any experience with any of these (Canon G1X-G9x series, Panasonic ZS series, Sony RX series)?

mvetrano2, this really depends on what you shoot, what you want to record and what you want to do with your images.

I have four travel cameras and can try to answer any questions you might have on any of them.

Best at fitting in a pocket is the Sony RX100 VII. There are too many reasons to list as to why this is near perfect for travel.

Best at being capable of travel abuse, fitting in a pocket and recording GPS tracking data is the Olympus TG-5.

Not quite pocketable, but with a bigger sensor and unique ring controls for aperture and shutter speed is my Panasonic LX100. This would still be my favorite for travel except that the Sony RX100 has seriously improved autofocus and video capability. (My wife's choice for her compact travel camera is the newer Panasonic LX100 II version to go with her too large for travel RX10IV)

Newest of all is a Samsung Galaxy S23 that Verizon insisted on giving me. It has three lenses, is more capable than it should be and I'm working at figuring out what is does and doesn't do.

I just got back from Jamaica Sunday. I brought my newly acquired (for this trip) Sony RX100 VII and my Olympus TG5 and got some pretty nice shots. The convenience and quality of both made for an enjoyable trip. For shooting locally I prefer my Canon R6II with a half dozen lenses. My preferences of course. Here are a few examples from the two hundred or so shots that I took.

Sony RX100 VII is far superior to my old Canon G16 that had a 2/3” inch sensor. I have used it for a backup camera for extensive foreign travel. However, my Panasonic G9 and small M43 PL lenses are my go to travel kit. Good luck.

I've had quite a few pocket-sized P&S cameras. What i've found is their are always some compromises and none are perfect. The Sony RX100 vii is the best of the bunch. Features - Panasonics, but let down by the lens quality and focusing in low light, somewhat noisy, Olympus - Stylus 1, good long lens, except at max zoom, smaller sensor, Canon G5X ii - good lens, slow to no focus in low light, 720 HS - long lens poor picture quality, don't know about the others, Sony - HX99 long lens, small sensor, uses tiny card, RX100VA - short, fast lens, fast focus in low light, lens too short, Sony RX100 vii, fast focus in low light, slower, but longer lens - best of the bunch, Casio EX - not bad, no viewfinder, long, sharp lens.

What I've found is a "better" lens (for low light) does no good if the camera can't focus or has slow focus. It does no good if the processor or sensor adds a bunch of noise to the pictures. It does no good if the lens gives burry pictures in low light. It does no good if the menu is so convoluted as to make the camera unusable.

Best of the bunch is the Sony RX100 vii for overall picture quality, longish, but slower lens (200mm), sensor (stacked 1 inch), good focusing in low light, The menu is ridiculously complex, but the saving grace is the FN button and the My Menu where in both you can choose what to place there and what to use, and forget the other stuff, good quality pictures even at high ISO.

I have rejected some of the shorter (24-70mm lens) cameras as the lens is just to short and limiting, and some of the bigger bridge cameras as to big and many have very small sensors. That's my take on the whole pocketable, travel cameras.

I went through the exact same thought process a couple of years ago for an upcoming trip to Italy. I too am a Canon user, but the camera and lenses were too big for what I wanted to be doing. I wound up with a used Olympus PEN-F, and a “pancake” lens. When the lens is mounted, it looks like a point and shoot. The lens has a zoom range of say 25 to 80 in 35mm equivalent. It fits in your pocket with this lens mounted. I also bought a used zoom lens that I carried in a small pouch, equivalent of about 30 - 300. That’s all I needed, and used it first back then, and then for two subsequent trips to Europe. Hope you have a great time! JimR

What exactly do you mean by “hefty zoom”? A bridge camera with a hefty zoom will probably be as large as your R10 with the 18-150mm RF-S lens and not approach the quality. Now maybe that ~29-240mm equivalent range isn’t long enough. You might carry one extra lens for those rare occasions you need more length. When I went to Scotland last August I left my FF Nikons at home and took my Olympus OM-1 with a few lenses. My 12-40 was all I used except the one day I hoped to see wildlife, so I switched to the 40-150 with the 2x TC and used my iPhone 13 for the landscapes and it did ok. As it turned out the only wildlife I saw was a Grey Heron, well seagulls and cormorants but I see those every time I go out around here.

I use a compact camera regularly -- my most used camera in fact as I carry it with me everywhere. I leave the house; the compact goes along.

When I was shopping for the compact I use now I considered the Sony RX100 VII noted above. We all have different priorities and are different in what we choose to photograph so fortunately we have some choices in cameras. The Sony was a runner up for me and instead I bought a Canon G7xII. The two cameras are virtually identical in shape and size (Canon is 2 grams heavier and the Sony is 1 mm thicker). They both have the same sensor -- I suspect literally in that I think the Canon uses Sony's 1" sensor for the G7.

I don't do video so I don't care what video features they have.

So then for me it boiled down to the lens and here the two cameras are quite different.

The Sony has a 28mm - 200mm equivalent f/2.8 - 4.5 zoom.
The Canon has a 24mm - 100mm equivalent f/1.8 - 2.8 zoom.

I see wide and maybe once or twice a year (probably not) I see something I want to photograph that would require a long lens. So the 200mm equivalent reach on the Sony's long end does nothing for me. I'm likely to go years before ever wanting to use it. On the other hand the 24mm equivalent on the Canon is occasionally not wide enough and there's times for me when I'm cussin' that it isn't 20mm equivalent -- 28mm equivalent on the Sony was a deal breaker for me. Top that off with the Canon lens being 1 & 1/2 stops faster than the Sony lens and that clinched it for me. And one last consideration: the Canon is 1/3 to 1/2 less expensive than the Sony.

I'm very happy with the G7 and it really is my most used camera. IQ is excellent; the scene below has 9 to 10 stop DR range -- no problem for today's 1" sensor cameras.

Hi, Ysarex
I too have a G7. I was wondering if you could explain what "9 or 10 DR range" means.

Thank you,
