How is it possible that my new iPhone 14 Max Pro can have a 45 Megapixel sensor? All my Sony cameras top out at 24 megapixels? I realize that More is Better but don’t understand how they can have that many megapixels on such a small sensor!

Megapixels have always been a marketing tool for digital cameras of any kind.
Yes it’s possible. But do you need or want 45 meg pix high resolution files of your kids with chocolate on their faces?

More is just more. Low light ability and DOF of the much smaller sensor, along with other features, are not the same as the same number of megapixels on 4/3rds, APS-C, FF, and MF. Yes, it can be useful to have that many megapixels if you are strongly cropping a smartphone image. That would make a selling point for one smartphone versus another. But that is not necessarily going to make the smartphone image better than a larger format's image.
Successful photographers do the one thing the unsuccessful are unwilling to do: they always buy the camera with the most pixels.

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm inclined to believe your comment was a bit tongue in cheek.
Perhaps it is simple as their use of very small pixels that are packed tightly together. Samsung phones that have 200 megapixels. Of course, they use more than one lens to cover the pixel array.

Oh yeah? Well MY phone has 64 megapickles. My old camera only goes up to 40 MP, and wants to be stabilized for that. Marketing can say anything and tell us it's important.
Hmmmm, are Marketing Departments made up of retired congresspeople?
My Df has produced many a fine image, at least imho. It’s 16.2mp. Many photogs over fret me thinks. There’s skill involved in using these devices. Don’t shoot me please.
The difference between who you are and the photographer you want to be is about 30 megapixels.
Not all pixels are created equal.
I agree with Bill. People have drowned trying to wade across a lake with an average depth of five feet.

The iPhone 14 has 3 lenses on the back. Is it possible that they have three 15-MPx sensors?
All those pixels will be appreciated when someone catches you doing something stupid. That way your face will be clearly identifiable.

There was a time, back when cameras had 4 or 6 or maybe even a few more MP, when there was real value in moving to a camera with more resolution. Even though the habit to covet ever more pixels is still with us, the true "need" was satisfied quite some time ago.
I am fortunate to have two modern cameras...a DX model with 21 MP and an otherwise very similar full frame model with 46 MP. The full frame camera came first, and I added the camera with the smaller sensor when it became patently obvious that 46 MP is just way overkill for much photography. The DX camera happily records 75-80% of my exposures.
