I agree. And a great camera choice, that A7RV won several "camera of the year awards", is highly rated by reviewers, working pros and hobbyists alike, and is superb.

I owned 61mp Sony A7RIV and now its upgraded A7RV,with that same 61mp sensor plus other new features. That ultimate resolution and detail with that 61mp sensor (when you use lenses that can resolve that sensor), is just stunning and allows great crops.

1) Sony 61mp A7RIV, Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens. The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California USA.

2-3) Sony 61mp A7RIV, Sony 135mm f1.8 GM lens. Environmental Scientist, Brooke Hildebrand. at sunset in the Valley of Fire, Nevada, USA. First the full frame, then a tight crop from the same image. Amazing crop ability with images from that 61mp sensor, and the cropped image still retains great resolution and detail.

Click on download to see better image quality, even with UHH image compression and file size limitations.

Cheers and best to you.

Now the communications characteristics of smart phones are barely distinguishable, so they are competing as cameras.

A recent example from my 20 mpxl Canon 1DX MK3 shot with the highly rated 50mm TSE manual lens... This image will easily print to 60" wide and look excellent. (This example posted here is downsize edited to about 6 mpxs)

A lens can sometimes plays a larger roll than a sensor with its "line resolution" capabilities...

Size always matters. Just as men with bigger "equipment" are always better lovers, photographers with more pixels are always better photographers.

The need is to have lenses that can FULLY resolve the pixel density of your camera's image sensor at whatever the sensor's megapixel count is. . Match all that properly and yes you can blow up the image to large sizes. The sensor megapixel count, pixel density and lens resolution all matters equally, not one more than the other, just physics.

Megapixels, Sensor Size or Lens: What Matters Most?
https://www.photodoto.com/megapixels-sensor-or-lens/

"Megapixels, sensor size, and the lens you choose all affect image quality in different ways. Megapixel count is important in certain types of photography, while sensor size affects the quality of each pixel. Better lenses improve the quality of the image by compensating for smaller photosites."

Cheers and best to you

As long as you stand β€˜a respectful distance’ from the photo - where you can see the whole thing - I believe it is about β€œbragging rights” most of the time. On occasion, you have to crop some.
