Right, better to go for the one with the 18-55.

Well, maybe. Not sure if you're being sarcastic though. The 28-135 is probably a much better lens optically and build wise than a early 18-55 kit lens and also has much greater reach. My comment was really about the wide end. However that's not that important for some people. I know several people who used the 28-135 as their general walk around lens on a crop camera back in the day.

However, for folks like me, the wide end is much much more important. As a general rule, over 95% of my images are between 16mm and 50mm. But that's just me.

Personally, I think any of the EF-S 18-135 IS models is the best companion for the cropped EOS DSLRs, followed by wide(r) aperture primes.

Will keep looking, may find a nice 50d at some poimt. Thanks.

The upgrade to the 50D was the 60D. However, many people were unhappy with the upgrade to the 60D primarily because the magnesium alloy body was replaced with a polycarbonate plastic one similar to those used in Canon Rebel entry level models.

Hello everyone, been reading this forum for a while and just joined today. a question about a canon 40D. Iknow its an old camera but I think it was a good deal at 97.00 witha shutter count of 1840. just noticed the main dial when turning to adjust shutter speed, after a few cliks the dial spins freely then will click a few more times. is this normal or is somthing wrong. bought on Amazon so can be returned if not working correct. thank you for letting me ramble on. Did lo0ok up manual online but couoldn't find this mentioned.

The shutter dial should NOT spin freely. There might be a screw on the underside that came loose or fell off. For the price you paid bring it in for an overhaul. While it is not state of the art by today’s standards it was a nice semipro back then.

I wouldn't spend any money to overhaul this 16 year old 40D with a bad main dial. When I had this same problem with my much newer Canon 7D Mark II it cost me around $300 for Canon to repair it. It definitely not a screw on the underside that came loose. It will require the replacement of an entire assembly. However, even if it was something as simple as a loose screw. it would still require a significant amount of disassembly of the camera body. He can return that camera and, for a modest additional cost over what he paid for the 40D, purchase the newer and significantly better Canon 50D with its 15mp sensor and much higher resolution LED screen..

Thank you for the informed insight. I have never used a 40D. The closest I have is a EOS Rebel 2000. I believe that camera was about seven years later.
I can appreciate the sentimental value of that camera. I have a few cameras under an acrylic case sitting on a shelf as a conversation piece.

I am not sure what you mean by newer but if you meant that in relative terms, you might want to consider the Canon 7D Mark II which is a significant upgrade to the 50D. It was released in Fall 2014 and was discontinued a few years ago.

Good that you are sending back to Amazon; you don't want another 40D. Don't go for anything less than a 50D. I have a 70D which I bought new and still am using; it's very good. Also, you don't need a new lens. The 18-135 you have is a very good lens!!!

Yes, several of have now indicated that he should not get anything older than a 50D which is a much more advanced camera than the 40D.

Good luck in your quest. There is a lot of gear out there. It can be very daunting searching through the maze of choices for ones that meet your requirements and your budget.
