There are several positive benefits to subscriptions that are often overlooked.

The Lightroom/Photoshop program is better because of the subscription system. The steady cash flow allows planned, intentional and effective product development. They know what they can invest and work on it consistently.

If you have a business, it is a lot easier to "expense" lower monthly costs than to "invest in" and "depreciate" expensive assets.

It helps to minimize software piracy. Besides being wrong, "pirates" don't contribute to the company's product development that we that pay benefit from.

I disagree about whether subscriptions are easier to "expense" for a business. For photographers, a Section 179 deduction is easy, and I can't imagine them hitting the threshold.

I do enjoy "talking shop". solving technical problems, exchanging "war" stories and experiences. I just do not enjoy all the negativity, chronic complaining, and infighting that occurs on these online forums. In the time it takes to write a long diatribe and carry on through a 10-page argumentative thread, one can shoot and process a trainload of images, and find people. places and things to photograph. Shoot a scenic, a still life, your cat, your kids, set up a still life, experiment with lightning, test your gear, clean your lenses- lots to do! POST YOUR PICTURES and get comments!

Hey, now.
Kinda sneaky how you did a little adjusting in the quote box to expose my inadequate proofreading where I missed my incorrect spelling of "pastime" on page 2. Such a crafty way to post-process my comment without whining about it! 😊

Oh, but you didn't see that as being sufficiently adequate post-process editing, though. You went ahead and used the healing and cloning tools to clean up a distracting object where I put in the slang of "photoging". Why, you just slinged that right up in the select option and slung it right out of the frame....all without whining about it....and if I don't quit with this layering of focusing on my use of a touch of slang, it may push you to once again bring on some burning and dodging as you go to slinging my slanging about "kinda" "slung", right onto the cutting room floor....all without whining about it, of course. 😊

Thank you for the knowledge and experience and respectful demeanor you bring into your commenting in these topics.

I know I paid more than $3.26 a roll for the same film in 1980 that costs $12.00 a roll today. But I'll take a $12.00 64GB SDXC card over a roll of film, today.

The number of pixels in a sensor. It's just not as important as other features of a given camera. I've taken images with a 4MP camera, back in the early 2000s that would rival several recent models/brands. At the time I didn't know what a pixel was and when I questioned the sales person, he said " don't worry, good glass is THE most important thing." I absorbed that and never looked back

Agreed. Learning to use the tool is required for applying it creatively with consistency. That can seem to be a barrier for some. It needn't be.

Yes... We were dedicated vegans for about 24 months, then slowly added fish and seafood. We will eat lean red meat about every six weeks for the iron and complete proteins, but the health benefits of limiting it are significant.

For me with the Adobe Photographers plan, that number is $1200.

THE most important thing is the nut behind the lens. After that, optics.

Yup.
As bad as my Ancestry membership at something like $200 a year.
Ten years, $2,000.
And I can justify that just like you can Adobe.
It all depends on what is important to us, eh?
