Hey, we were on campus at the same time. Probably bumped into each other at the Student Union or perhaps the 'Library' (and I don't mean the one on campus).

The 'Library', that's my buddy Dennis, he also graduated in 1971 (he was a EE), and retired from the CIA as Deputy Director before he passed away in 2020 - August 2008 - Sony A100, 18-70mm

One of the most interesting railroad related event that I've ever attended was 'Railfair '99', which was hosted by the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California. It was billed as the last great gathering of steam in the millennium. Note that virtually all of the locomotives were running, including all of the steam locomotives, which was very interesting since, as my wife put it, they seemed like they were living, breathing monsters.

And for the record, I've been a 'card carrying' member of the California State Railroad Museum for over 25-years (and I've got the pins to prove it).

Thanks for an interesting series of train images. I also got a kick out of seeing the shots made with an old Minolta Vectis 25 Advanced Photo System camera. I never had the "25" but did have a somewhat similar "3000" and the SLR Minolta S-1. While these do not compare with more modern cameras, or even larger format cameras of their time, I was able to record people, places, things and events in my life of that time that I still enjoy looking at today.

Ha! That was my favorite bar followed closely by the Isle Royale, the Dog House (pickled HB eggs), the Ambassador and the B&B (more pickled eggs). I spent WAY too much time in the Library! Got to know Jon Davis pretty well and he got me interested in the POR Rally. Beer by the pitcher. Egg Carton and Barn Wood wall coverings. Epicurians. Pizza Buffet. Chili at Carnival. Oh, and Senior Walk. Cheers!

I also participated in several of the rallies that Jon Davis organized, as seen below. While that was my car, I navigated and a friend drove. At times we used his VW, as seen in the second shot.

As for pizza, we sort of split it between the Library and the Ambassador, but on Sunday's we'd go to Tony Buckovich's 'Sports Bar' to watch the NHL games. Although the Dog House was where we'd go prior to Tech's hockey games, particularly on Fridays for the fish fry. And then after the games we'd go to the Isle Royale Bar to 'wait for traffic to clear'.

Wonderful shots. The only thing missing is your “pocket protector”. The last POR I saw in Houghton for was 2020 0r 2021 (I can’t remember if Covid shut things down). They ran the Press Stage on Lake Avenue between Franklin Square and the Lift Bridge. Toss in a few chicanes and you have some nice action but at low speed. I have some pictures if I can find them. Good times.

2-6-6-2 mallet steam locomotive used for logging; engine on display in Flagstaff, AZ. I have an HO scale brass model of this exact locomotive.
