For a local backup, I have been using SuperDuper for years and am happy with it. I use Backblaze for cloud backup. This in addition to Apple Time Machine. These backups provide me with a desired redundancy.

SuperDuper is outstanding. It is the best bargain in the software world. And it produces bootable back ups. Finally, the customer service is provided by the very guy who built the app and it is unparalleled.

I am in the process of converting from Windows to Mac. On my windows machine I use Vice Versa software to back up my files, but the creators of Vice Versa do not make a version that is compatible with Apple IOS. I would like advise on what software to use for the purpose of backing up my files in addition to Time Machine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Exactly what Ednsb said! I went through this process about 4 months ago looking for a cloud backup and received great advice from the Hoggers. I'm now using BackBlaze to backup my systems (and external drives) to the cloud. I also use Carbon Copy Cloner to create backups on external hard drives that I keep in separate locations. I have three backups (two on site using CCC and one in the cloud using BackBlaze) of everything. CCC allows you to specify exactly what you want backed up and when. I set my backups for 7:00a.m. every morning and they're done before I start working. Backblaze simply backs up EVERYTHING - really simple to setup. The first backup takes a while (I have over 50,000 photos and it took about 6 days to complete) but then it runs in the background. I highly recommend both CCC and Backblaze. Oh, I also use Time Machine so I have complete redundancy.

I use Carbon Copy Coner and have for years.
It backs up your whole system not just files.
One caution. Use the dont delete anything file option.

You are leaving the world of terror-in-computing and entering the realm of computing as it was meant to be. The simplicity of the Mac will give you relief you never knew existed. Get a piece of black crepe to wrap your IBM-clone in and bury it in a landfill. Backing up a Mac is much easier, as is working with all files. Welcome to a new world of delight. We wait for you to join like we did.

I'm new to the Mac (about 1 year) so I use Time Machine. The only limitation I see there is that it uses an external disk and I don't know how to back that disk up automatically other than just copying it occasionally to another disk. It could be just me since I haven't used MacOS for that long.

OTOH, I used CrashPlan on my Windows machines. I just transferred the account to my Mac so it automatically backs the system up to the cloud. Automatic is best because you don't have to think about it. You just have to pay the bill (and by giving them a credit card # even that's automatic).

CrashPlan can also back up to a local disk so I will probably set that up sometime. The only problem is that I don't always have an external drive hooked up to my MacBook since it gets moved around a lot. So sometimes it's a week between external drive availability. Time Machine complains frequently about that.

Check out SuperDuper!...it's like Carbon Copy Cloner. Very easy to use and you can boot from it if things get messed up. If your main drive is screwed up- you can copy your backup to the main HD and you are back in business in a few minutes. A life saver. This plus Time Machine makes for a smart combo.

I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for almost 11 years. It has been very reliable, it is easy to use and is reasonably priced. (I also use Time Machine as a secondary backup.). I think you will enjoy your foray into the Mac universe!

My wife and I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner since version 1 and would use nothing else on our 5 Mac computers, desktops, iMacs and Laptops.

You cannot find a better solution. Also we use Time Machine In tandem with CCC.

I also switched from Windows to Mac many years ago. I have found Apple's "Time Machine" backup system easy, convenient and reliable. I understand the desire to stick with something you know but based on my experience it's a needless worry. You could use a 1 or 2 TB drive and simply copy your actual files (documents, user folders, photos etc.) for safety until you're through the trasition and then convert that drive to another "Time Machine" backup drive when you're more confident. I'm confident that you'll like the Mac environment once you adjust to the differences in approach.

I would call Apple Support (800) 275-2273. They are great, they will take you thru all the steps and clean the way for the future. Get started clean and permanent.

I use Time Machine for my local backup (my computer and my two external photo drives) on a separate external drive. It runs quietly in the background. I use Backblaze for my remote backup. It too runs quietly in the background once you get your initial backup completed (mine took a few weeks, as I have about 100K photos on the externals).

I have blessedly suffered only one disk failure, on one of the external photo drives, and was able to restore it to a new replacement drive quickly and easily using Time Machine.

Time Machine is very good. You can use multiple local storage devices or cloud based locations.

iDrive is an additional product. One account can back up multiple devices. I backup my MacBook, wife's iMac and my Windows PC.

That is what I use, also, for backing up Mac and Windows. It has some very important features including encryption using the user's own key.

I use Backblaze for my external hard drives, which contain all of my images. BB also backs up the computer, as does Time Machine.
