Mine is dead. Trying to decide on replacing it or moving up to a Mark II. I do street and general photography; no wildlife or sports. The price difference is about $400. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

OM-D E-M1 original is ancient history now. Realize that such older models may be hard to get repaired. Parts may be unavailable.

I would look for a Mark II in reasonable condition. An alternative might be a Lumix G9, used. It takes the same lenses as the OM-D models.

Thanks. If I go with a mark one I will buy an extended warranty from KEH

If I were to buy a new camera I would update to the OM-1.

However have you contacted OM System (formally Olympus) for a repair estimate? OM System (formally Olympus) recently repaired my Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mii for $275.

If street photography is what you shoot you could be better served using one of the Olympus Pen models. I do not do street photography often but when I use my Pen EP-5 I hardly call any attention and if I do not use the EVF-4 (electronic finder) people hardly notice me.
The Pen series are small, unobtrusive cameras that can fit in a pocket.

Olympus Shooter

I would agree, the OM-1 would be the upgrade. I have been on Olympus shooter for almost as long as you have, I started with OMD EM 1 mark II, to a OMD EM 1-X then a mark III. Have moved to the OM 1 and am ecstatic with the camera and results. It has the best stabilization in the business, of course all the lenses that you have are interchangeable and will work on this camera, I can’t say enough good things about it it’s lightweight.

This would be a great upgrade for a few dollars more than what you were considering

I went from OM-D to Pen-F. No regrets.

Folks do looooove that Pen-F.

Some dig its vintage facade. That doesnt impress me but I like the layout. Its the only OM with an upper corner eyepiece, so I dont really care what it looks like.

Comparing specs it would easily replace an early version EM-1.

Someone suggested that the "old relic" look of the silver top version seemed to prevent intimidating strangers. Might be something to that, sometimes, perhaps especially with a pancake ?

The "harmless relic" look ?

My fave feature: Eyepiece at the corner.

Have you considered purchasing a "like new" or "excellent condition" secondhand EM1 mark II. It is a cracking camera - I part exchanged both of my EM1 bodies for two EMI mark II bodies and never looked back. But, having said that, if you are satisfied with the performance of the EM1, it's difficult to justify changing up.

I just moved from the OM-D E-M1 Mk1 to a Lumix GH5 - kept my Olympus lens. So so impressed with much better menus and colour gives me much less PP.

You can have one black and one silver.

As usual, one for slides and one for BW. Oooopzez ... we dont do that anymore.

When both were alive, which did you prefer, EM-1 or Pen-F ?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FWIW I use a Pen-F, EM-5II and EM-1II. Altho the "1" has 20MP and more better features, the "5" is the "friendliest". Its really subjective but of the three its my go-to for general use. About $450 bags one. Everybody should have one :-)
