Strikes me as a foolish answer. I have taken tens of thousands of car rides and still buckle my seatbelt every time. Backups and seatbelts are designed for the exception to the rule.

It’s no longer made by RAV Power but the NewQ Filehub is the same thing. You’ll also need a portable SSD to go with it.

You don't need an SSD. You can also use a high-capacity flash drive.

Another vote for NewQ FileHub. They were the manufacturer for RAV Power, who discontinued the item because it didn’t fit their product line. When that happened, NewQ decided to market it under their own name. It’s a little pricy but can also serve as a media hub and secure router. I bought one when RAV was selling them and take it on practically every trip to create reliable backups. It even has a one-button feature. Put an SD card in one slot, attach a storage device, push a button, and it backup the entire SD card. Excellent product.

Would sort of agree.
I learned my lesson in the film days.
Toured Sydney, Australia all day. Went throughs roll of film so I thought. When I got to 37 exposures I got suspicious.
Film never spooled on the take-up reel.
From then on I would shoot off 2 frames, make sure the take up knob was spinning and twist it backwards to make sure the film spooled.
With digital I don’t leave anything to chance. Download to MacBook, review on big screen. Make sure everything is set right before taking another shot.
That’s just me.

Some folks have totally lost all their trip and safari shots by leaving all their shots on sd cards and having their gear and cards stolen out of their rooms or vehicles. At the very least store your shots on a portable drive each night, and keep it separate from your gear. Words of wisdom. I hear all the sad stories in my facebook photography groups I administer and moderate. It does happen folks and is on the rise it seems.

Cheers and best to you.

Owning a photo lab for 20 years, heard many horror stories myself.
Disk recovery was a very profitable segment of our business.

I also have one of those drives. Not only will it store your photos, but it’s can be used as an emergency power source for your cell phone or other mobile devices. It works great and fits easily into the camera bag. Here’s a link to the western Digital page that gives you all the specs.

Just like “Ronichas” I have a Western Digital My Passport wireless SSD. It does not need a computer. Every night I copy the photos for the day on to the drive. There is a slot in the drive for a card. Just insert it and the drive does the rest. It’s great but I am not sure they make this droive any longer. But I would try to find something like it.

Read every response. Was surprised that there was only one mention of Drop Box. You have an iPad. Back up to Drop Box or One Drive. You can then access it anywhere and all your stuff will be safe until you get home. Luck.

I agree with Superfly. I have NewQ FileHub and a SanDisk 1TB external SSD. Filehub will read SD card and copy contents to SSD. Good mobile app to walk you thru the process of configuring and using FileHub.

Check this out... I have used something like it for years. You can plug a card reader into it or transfer via WiFi. I like to keep all my photos on cards as backup too. Cards are cheap

Are there techniques that allow backing camera memory cards that *don’t require access to a computer*.

I prefer not to take my laptop on longish trip. I’m with using my iPad but it has very limited memory and would not get me much storage.

Thanks

I have a 256gb card in my phone that I can change easily. Normally I just set my camera up to duplicate both cards when I shoot. I shoot Nikon. If I run into a running out of card issue I transfer them to the SD card in my phone with snap bridge. A little slow but it works.

You could, but I’d recommend an SSD.

It’s no longer available. That’s why I recommended the NewQ Filehub. I actually had the non-SSD version of the My Passport Wireless. It was great until the HD went. Now that I replaced the HD with a 2TB SSD it’s even better.
