Are there techniques that allow backing camera memory cards that *don’t require access to a computer*.
I prefer not to take my laptop on longish trip. I’m with using my iPad but it has very limited memory and would not get me much storage.
Thanks
I just take enough cards, label the storage pockets in a small card case, and download when I get home.

Curious, are you not concerned that you may have had some sort of issue that the images are for some reason with corruption etc. from the start of the trip?
If I were to rely on just cards, I would make sure my cameras had dual card slots and backup in camera while shooting.

Take many cards with you. I usually take two 36GB cards for each day I will be gone. Do not reuse until pictures are downloaded onto desktop when I get home.

One way is if your camera has two slots, and can record the same signal to both slots, this would backup your shots. Yes, it would require more cards. But the cost of cards has come down and what is the worth of not missing a shot.
I once had two almost new Sandisk CF cards error me "card cannot connect to camera" the first day of an Africa Safari after I had my only leopard sighting of the trip. Sandisk sent me the restore program and I got my leopard shots back when I got home, but I would never rely on a single copy on an SD card. I would vote for the adapter for your i-pad and transfer the cards to 3 different SSDs each night if you really want to be safe. I do it with my laptop.

My solution works perfectly. It’s inexpensive to boot. Used it all over the world. With added benefits of wifi bridge and a portable battery back up. Could not be easier.
I remain flummoxed why the one answer to the question is ignored.
How about because it is not the ONLY answer and not even the least expensive answer?
We all approach back up differently and several ways are effective. You enjoy your way and that is fine but not everyone will.

I guess my point is the OP asked about backing up his photos not taking multiple cards or just hoping they don’t get corrupted. He did not ask that. He asked a specific question about backing up without a computer. It just seems the responses were not applicable to the question.

I would question whether the usb-c port on the ipad can deliver sufficient power to power the card reader and SSD or USB stick without using a powered hub. Not saying it won’t because I’ve not tried it but that and the extra draw on the ipad battery would be a concern to me. Do you have one of those and is it powered…which eliminates the concern?
It works fine for me. I usually start with a fully charged battery on the iPad.

It says it’s a special order item so I’m guessing it’s unavailable since WD no longer makes it.

If you bring a SSD hard drive for storage you can use the iPad as a transfer tool. The Camera Connection Kit can be used to download from camera to iPad. Then connect the hard drive and transfer from iPad to SSD. Delete files from iPad and repeat next time you want to download from camera.
I used this method back when I had a Microsoft Tablet, but I don’t know if that would work with an iPad. Do experiment before you leave home.

Could be because there is not one correct answer.
