GAS attacks create and maintain both the used and new camera markets. Nothing wrong with how people spend their money.

I absolutely agree with you, but I see GAS as a "must have regardless" syndrome which supports many manufacturing industries, helping to maintain high prices and high salaries at the expense of those caught up in, as I suggested, label worship, very often for totally wrong reasons.

How would one know they're not a successful photographer without having tried the best equipment?

I don't think a successful photographer needs the "best"? equipment?
How about defining your interpretation of "successful" ? Does that include yourself?

The best equipment, ok! I'm just starting Astrophotography. I have, not the best equipment, but I do have an 80mm triplet with a pro-cooled ZWO 1183 CCD camera, a finder scope with a ZWO camera, a Lumix GH5S micro four-thirds camera, a 13mm f/1.4, and a 300mm f/4 for deep sky. I also use and prefer my Z6ii with ZS and F lenses with adapters. I also have an adapter for F to micro four-thirds. Both mirrorlesses are also wonderful for video and most other photography.
Now, this isn't the best equipment for astrophotography so I had better (or not) get hold of the best. Is this GAS? I think I'll send an email to Abes of Maine to see if they have a Hubble or its successor the James west telescope. I'd also better check that they are not grey market, and what the warranties are. Mind you I don't have lazy billions of dollars in my bank account waiting to be spent. I wonder what the delivery is on these. Maybe Amazon might be better! I do have a Prime membership.
Of course, I'll have to pack up and move intra-state to the best dark-sky site and build a home in the middle of nowhere.

With all that said, the best equipment is all relative. Cost, use, and what I enjoy all contribute to making my decision the right one for me. Having knowledge (no GAS) is one aspect and learning by doing, and making a GAS decision is another. Sometimes you need both. Simply being told or deluged with suggestions regularly by a windy expert doesn't guarantee the best learning or indeed the best results!

Cheers,
John (a happily retired Navy veteran)
The best equipment, ok! I'm just starting Astropho... (show quote)

The best now is the Webb telescope and to buy one is tough with supply chain issues.
ASTRO is difficult and you should be fine.
An 80 triplet is awesome. Enjoy it.
Use that scope on lunar crators the details and contrast will amaze you

Back at n the day gentlemen an upgrade in “sensor” resolution was new film$3-$8.00, your Nikon FM was just as good a film holder as a new F3, they were both nearly the same size, you weren’t going to detect significant difference in the photos unless a different film was used. It’s all been turned on its head.
My first DSLR was the Fuji S pro 1, I believe it did 6.5 megapixels took wonderful pictures, I bought it used, $700? Don’t remember, the box had a sticker that said $4,995. Thank god someone had GAS in the day, someone spent $5k on a camera, that allowed the camera store and Fuji to make a profit for further model up grades, inthink I spent $800 on my Pro S2, someone had paid $3k when it was new. It’s been that way all along, my newest camera is my D700, I was fine, through a friend he told me about his buddy that was selling an D850, well those are so far out of my league, 140,000/200,000 on the shutter count, a lot, but no signs of duress, clean as new, $1,000.00, I’ve never owned a fully contemporary camera in my adult life, close, here’s where HAS comes into place; I practically lived on the desire to upgrade always checking sites, I was looking at a D810 for $800 and was going to go that route, but this D850 was win-win baby. Now my GAS has moved, I’ve got lenses but it’s those premium AF-D, and AI lenses, they’re cheap and fun to collect. And the gas goes on…

It certainly doesn't stand for Get And Shoot.
There are still plenty of self-styled photographers who slobber over the likes of AA - who did Get And Shoot, without GAS.

Well... I believe that we, Engineers, are cured against GAS.

That's because we are used to spend millions - of other people's money - in fancy stuff. And we get to play with it!

So, when it gets to spend our own money in gear, the itch has already worn off...

Quite judgemental of you. Here is my judgement: Hoarding money is a sign of greed

👍. Also, those who shun new things might be indecisive and have a fear learning. There are good and bad reasons for most decisions, equipment purchases included.

Success has a lot to do with luck, but it also involves using the best equipment.

I've always believed that with the best equipment, the only thing that need improvement was me. I've applied that principle to everything from cameras to ski equipment and cars. Seems to have worked, mostly.
