Not true. The laws of physics still apply and, if you still shoot film, the laws of chemistry.

Very agreed, but you left out something good ... how it supplies inventory for the used fear market that some of us really depend on :-)

All those buyers of the "next best thing" provide late model "previous best things" for us who appreciate that. So, spend away, all youse gassers ! And market madly, all youse manufacturors.

It's hardwired into our fabric of being since the dawn of humans for our survival depended on "hunting and gathering". We have become creatures that covet and for those who may be in doubt, "Do you own any jewelry whatsoever?", and if so, what do you do with it? At least with owning a camera, the possibilities are only limited by our imagination.

Agreed!

Photography is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you have to buy the best equipment.

OMG, does that that hit home. Or it should.

I remember reading Rockwell 's review of the Canon R. Wow! Sounded like something I'd want. (I was looking to upgrade my XSi at the time.) Then I went to Canon's website to check out the features and specifications. Whoa!!! This thing was way over my pay head. Way too many bells and whistles, and too many ways to "get there" and too many ways to get lost on the way. Thank the maker the RP came out right after.

It is even worse when it comes to smartphones, as millions worldwide are blindly compelled to ditch perfectly good smartphones and buy a new model EVERY YEAR, and even every six months, just to have the latest. The smartphone makers like Apple along with all the providers even push plans to make sure you buy a new one every year, whether you really need it or not.

I stuck with my perfectly good smartphone for years, so my provider decided it would no longer support that model on its system, so forcing folks to upgrade or try elsewhere with another provider. lol

As a pro photographer I buy the best gear that I can afford to do the work I need to accomplish, period. But I always shop around for best prices, and I will buy excellent third-party and used gear if it can get the job done and save me money too.

Cheers and best to you all.

The best equipment is what one can afford and feels comfortable using.

I have always said and maintained that how people spend their own money is their own business. If they want to spend it on XYZ then who am I to criticize that? I have wasted enough of my own money that I have no place telling others that they are wasting theirs. So what's wrong with GAS? It keeps a lot of people employed and feeds a lot of kids so even if you consider it a waste of money, it's doing a lot of good somewhere. The fact that you can't see that firsthand is no reason for someone to not do it.

No matter how expensive your equipment, when you find the ultimate subject for a picture it will be directly behind a microwave tower.

The best equipment, ok! I'm just starting Astrophotography. I have, not the best equipment, but I do have an 80mm triplet with a pro-cooled ZWO 1183 CCD camera, a finder scope with a ZWO camera, a Lumix GH5S micro four-thirds camera, a 13mm f/1.4, and a 300mm f/4 for deep sky. I also use and prefer my Z6ii with ZS and F lenses with adapters. I also have an adapter for F to micro four-thirds. Both mirrorlesses are also wonderful for video and most other photography.
Now, this isn't the best equipment for astrophotography so I had better (or not) get hold of the best. Is this GAS? I think I'll send an email to Abes of Maine to see if they have a Hubble or its successor the James west telescope. I'd also better check that they are not grey market, and what the warranties are. Mind you I don't have lazy billions of dollars in my bank account waiting to be spent. I wonder what the delivery is on these. Maybe Amazon might be better! I do have a Prime membership.
Of course, I'll have to pack up and move intra-state to the best dark-sky site and build a home in the middle of nowhere.

With all that said, the best equipment is all relative. Cost, use, and what I enjoy all contribute to making my decision the right one for me. Having knowledge (no GAS) is one aspect and learning by doing, and making a GAS decision is another. Sometimes you need both. Simply being told or deluged with suggestions regularly by a windy expert doesn't guarantee the best learning or indeed the best results!

Cheers,
John (a happily retired Navy veteran)
