I read a big long article about how too many reads and writes to an SSD will destroy it. Then I tried to do a a defrag. Windows will tell you , if you dont need it, dont do it as it shortens the life of the drive. So I bought a regular drive for half of an SSD

Maybe find a better source of information. The number of reads have no effect of the life of an SSD. Writes require an erase cycle which slowly wears the drive, but modern drives have such a high number of TB written that the average person is unlikely to ever reach it. What is much more likely is that the HD will die first. Regarding the price, yes, in terms of $/TB, conventional HDs are still less expensive, but the price/TB of SSDs is dropping in half every 12-18 months, and what you get back is speed that is anywhere from 10-50x faster (or more), but what is more important is that the random access time is in the 40 microsecond range, while the HD has an access time in the 12-16 millisecond range.
Regarding defrag, there is no reason to defrag an SSD since it’s a random access device. It doesn’t matter where the blocks to be read are in a sequence or not (which is one thing defrag on an HD does). Defragging would shorten the life since it uses erase/write cycles, but it’s unnecessary.
Don’t let incorrect information on the internet prevent you from using modern and superior technology.
"Writes require an erase cycle which slowly wears the drive"... bang on... The above link explains the process...

Got my new MBP with the M2 pro chip the other day - man this thing is awesome!! I did upgrade to 32 GIG of unified memory. Very fast!! Now I just need a couple of SSD external drives. I'm looking at something from either WD or Samsung. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanx to all for your help and opinions. I opted to with two SAMSUNG T7 - 2TB each. Now anyone know of a free app that I can. use to back up my hard drives? These hard drives will only be used for pictures

You have a choice of free programs to do that. Your best bet would be the Samsung utility. It works only with Samsung drives, so you're all set.

I've not used it, but one highly touted by IT personnel is a program called Macrium Reflect. It can be used to create a bootable image of your harddrive, too.

Unfortunately, they no longer have a free version of that.
Didn't know that... thanks.
