Got my new MBP with the M2 pro chip the other day - man this thing is awesome!! I did upgrade to 32 GIG of unified memory. Very fast!! Now I just need a couple of SSD external drives. I'm looking at something from either WD or Samsung. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have several LaCie Rugged.
I take one with me on trips and shoots.
They are - well - rugged.
Best,
John
(P.S. I have the same laptop you have. Love it.)

Samsung seem reliable, I use several with my MBP + my BigMac, mostly 2TB, some go back several years. Just remember they all go down at some point so backup is essential (note to self!).

SSD drives are the way I go. 2TB or 4TB, these drives are smaller than a cigarette pack and like 8mm thick.

WD Black 2tb SN 850x
Acasis 40 mbs NVMe enclosure
This combination runs about 2750mbs on my Mac mini M1. I set it up to store all my photos on it and it opens up when I click photos. I think the drive was about $165 and the enclosure about $115.
Good luck.

I use a couple of WD My Passport Ultras for my laptop and a backup, but I've had them for years.

Brian started this topic with "Now I just need a couple of SSD external drives". Solid State Drives. Brian also said he is considering WD or Samsung.

The LaCie Rugged is not an SSD.

The WD Black is not an SSD.

The WD My Passport Ultras is not an SSD.

For me, this was a good excuse to see what external SSD prices and availability are. I picked 2TB as a good size.

Examples are the Samsung 2TB T7 Shield Portable SSD and WD 2TB My Passport SSD. Both have read speeds of about 1000 MB/s and are in the $170 price range.

Consider that Brian invested in the "MBP with the M2 pro chip" for it's renown speed. That might mean that the LaCie 2TB Rugged SSD PRO Thunderbolt 3 External SSD is the right choice at $379. It has up to 2800 MB/s data transfer speeds!

These are the two I m thinking about getting except just the regular Samsung - not the shield. Amazon has each of them for $150. I can't justify the $380 for the LeCie.

You can get a 1 tb drive for under $100 (still have to buy the enclosure)

If you can justify an M2 Mac, you can justify anything!

I have ben quite pleased with the SSDs I got from Crucial - the X8s are the higher speed models and I have 1, 2 and now 4TB units as external drives on my M1 MBP. Crucial is a well respected provider of Mac gear and has been for decades - worth investigating.
