CHG CANON and Scott Wardwell. it is far past the time to end the sniping between the two of you. Your posts have diverted the intent of the OP who was simply seeking advice on a subject about which he was concerned. Thre was no need to devolve the post into a clash of egos.

The OP received what is needed in several various responses. They probably unwatched long ago. They certainly haven't participated. You can <unwatch> too, probably should have when the urban myths started to be repeated, and defined, and expanded, as well as exposed as ridiculous.
I bought a d7200 ? 8 years ago and no issues yet
Nikon currently has a 4 day sale on a lot of refurbished lenses and camera might want to check them out today.
Four years ago I purchased a refurbished D850 from Nikon directly. It came in a white box with a refurbished tag on it. The items that come with a new D850 were in the box as well. All new accessories. The camera looked and functioned perfectly and continues to do so. I believe I have about 18,000 actuations on that D850. There was a warranty with the refurbished camera. I wouldn't hesitate buying a refurbished item directly from Nikon or any other manufacturer as the techs that go over these used cameras bring them back to better than production models as they give them their undivided attention in cleaning, adjusting, bench testing, and certification.
In December I bought a brand new Z9. The D850 sits proudly next to my Z9 as a second camera for any planned shooting events.
Just purchased a D850 at the beginning of February and it looks and feels just like new. It had a little over 1600 actuations. I only wish Nikon would not be so cheap about their warrantys.

Contrast your phone discussion with my anecdotes, both multiple in-person selling and the receipt and testing of broken equipment, one where all you had to do was mount the lens and try to take a picture with the AF active. Getting a Return Authorization wasn't "unpleasant", just eye-opening on how reality differs from assumptions and urban myths.
Did you mean you worked for them in the past or that your testing was personally done by you after purchase? Perhaps the guy from KEH I spoke to several years ago was embellishing, I just can’t know. What I’m certain of is the expensive body and lens functioned perfectly and have continued to do so for several years now.
The only thing I noticed was some of the silver paint on a lens cap was scratched off. I didn care about that. I’ve only made one purchase of a Nikon refurb and all’s been fine there also. All in all on three items I saved about $2000 over new so I remain pleased. Have a good one.
I purchased a D810 DSLR, a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, and a 300mm f/2.8 lens all refurbished from Nikon USA. I would still have all 3 if it weren't for my switch to mirrorless. They were purchased at different times, all came in "as advertised condition. I didn't have any problems with any of the 3 items. Bev
I think refurb from Canon or Nikon are the best deals. They essentially look and work like new with a good price break. They don't come with original box also sold out quickly so you have to act fast. Equipment from KEH and MPB are also good with warranty but they are used and the price depends on availability and demand
I bought a refurb 850 from Nikon and it has performed great. No complaints especially about buying it at 2/3 the price of a new one.
Never from Nikon however my 80% of my equipment has come from B&H or Adorama used. Been pleased with every purchase
