Sue:
In the day, I shot Tri-X rated @ 400 and often pushed to 800. [I have heard of 1200]
Color was far slower.
A FAST lens is the FIRST thing you can do, but this probably won't help with the birds.
Good Luck!

I have not read the posts here in any detail but enough to suggest two matters.
1. Exposure compensation to the right (+) serves to reduce - slow down your shutter speed, and
2. A faster lens.

Any advise for shooting in low light ? It seems to be my Achilles heel

It is very dependent on what you are shooting with and what you are going to shoot. Please give us a little more information.

Try the Topaz products. Denoise is great for high ISO. Sharpen is also great.
