As far as driving 78 mph not being allowed, there are sections of hwy in Texas that have an 80 mph limit. There are also sections of I-15 in Idaho and Utah that also are limited to 80. The scary part is that these 80mph limits even apply to big trucks. Imagine an 80,000 pound vehicle doing 80 mph? I could never go anywhere near that because most big trucking companies (JB Hunt, Swift, etc computer limit their trucks to between 60 and 65)

I drive a pickup (it comes in handy at the ranch with 4x4) and I am getting 20-25 mpg (3/4 ton diesel) but I will never be called a "redneck" but I also don't tailgate. It's been proven that over 80% of accidents on the freeway are caused by following too close. Besides, my need for speed "got up and went". I learned that being a safe motorcycle rider made me a safer car/truck driver.

I agree with you in all these things. My motorcycle days also made me that much more a safe driver. Following too close is probably the biggest reason for highway accidents. those who drive trucks for business for other practical reasons are usually safe drivers. I have never called anyone a redneck especially not because of their vehicle choice and I don't speed.

OK, I started going down the rabbit-hole of this thread for so many reasons. I drive a Chevy Colorado V6 "short bed" pickup, and I drove tractor-trailers through the five boroughs of NYC and out across Long Island and then into JFK to pick up air freight, in my former life. Then, I started privately driving a gentleman for the past 38 years. I have taken police driver and security driver training courses, and yes, I confess, once got a ticket for tailgating someone doing 50 MPH in the middle lane of the NJTPK at rush hour, when I couldn't be in the left lane with a commercial vehicle!!! One of my few tickets, mind you. There is a major problem with society today and drivers, in particular. Just yesterday, I saw a school bus follow a car through an already redlight after my light was green as the first car at the intersection!!! There are bad drivers out there. It doesn't matter what vehicle they are driving. Everybody wants justice to be done on someone else. AND, Jerry, I always appreciate you. You are the straw that stirs the drink! Cheers!!!

I've had this post on my mind for a while, but l wasn't going to post it until I recently heard two other people comment on it. Pickup truck drivers tailgate!

Naturally, I don't mean every pickup driver, but when I see one approaching in my rearview mirror, I tense-up because I know that in a few minutes, all I will see is the grill. It makes no difference how fast I am going. It's never fast enough. I'm not one of those old fogies who drives ten mph under the limit. With a speed limit of 55, I refuse to go over 60. We have four police departments here, and I see people stopped almost every time I drive into town.

When I get tailgated, my standard procedure is to check my speedo to make sure I'm driving over 55. I'll speed up to 59, if I'm not already there. If he's still on my bumper after a mile, or so, I'll take my foot off the gas and slow down to about 50. Sometimes, they take the hint and drift back. If not, I look for a place to pull off the road and let him pass.

I know what the first excuse is going to be: they're going to work, and time is money. "Going to work" is not a legal excuse to speed or tailgate. In most cases, they're going home, going shopping, or going to get a cup of coffee. Basically, they're stupid rednecks driving big trucks, and they think they have to right to do whatever they want.

I've had four pickups over the years, and I always drove like a normal person.

There. I said it.

Living in TX for many years I saw a lot of pickup trucks with rifle racks in the back window.

What is it called when they hang a coffee cup from the rifle rack? Mug Shot.....

Where do you drive 78MPH? I don't see any where in the US has speed limit that high. 75MPH is the highest I've seen in the USA.

In 2018 BC (before covid) I drove from Las Vegas to Alta Utah on a road that had a posted limit of 80mph

Jerry, you doth protest too much. We pickup drivers aren’t any worse in the tailgating category than folks in cars. We just look bigger.

That's the bottom line, well said.

In Texas. The speed limit between Kerrville Tx and El Paso is 80 mph.i usually go about 84 mph on that stretch of I-10.i have my GPS on so it tells me exactly how fast I am going and at 4 mph over the speed limit will probably not get you a ticket.i have it on cruise control. I have been doing it all my life.the stretch of road between Berkstrum tx and near George Town tx is a toll road and the speed limit is 85 mph in some areas and the tundra will only give us about 14.2 mpg, but don't drive on the left lane unless you are passing someone or you will get stopped.i call it a fishing expedition.it's a good reason for the state troopers to stop you and check your driver's license, any outstanding warrent, ownership of vehicle, lic plate experation, inspection sticker, sobriety, and check to see if you are transporting drugs or illegal immigrants. I know this cause I have been stopped twice for the fishing expedition and as soon as they show up to your window they will ask if you knew that you were not supposed to be on the left lane unless you are passing someone ,but Don't worry cause this is just a warning.and most people agree with all of the above cause they know it's only a warning and then after all that, they don't even give you a warning ticket.

I used to have a motor home and after my wife pointed out that a tailgaters who hit the rear would get his just rewards if he hit us because the black water tank was right in front of the rear bumper.
As for pickup drivers railroading more than others I agree. I think there is something about some drivers (who would be aggressive in any vehicle) being predisposed to buying pickup trucks. I am nor talking about people who have a legitimate reason for having a pickup truck such as farmers or contractors etc. But the city sluckers that buy a truck and never use it as a truck. They just want a big aggressive looking vehicle because they are aggressive drivers anyway.
I handle them by first putting on my 4 way flashing lights for a few seconds. If that doesn't work. I put on the 4 ways and coast to slow down by about 15 km/h.
I then resume my usual peed at the speed limit plus 2 km/h.
If they repeat the tailgating for a third time I slow down the the slowest speed I can legally drive. That usually infuriates them so much they pull out and floor the accelerator. They roar past often blasting the horn I am prepared to brake in case they decide to cut back in just to scare me. That is usually the last I see of them.
Commercial truckers I handle a little differently, I try to identify their company and get vehicle ID such as a serial number. Then I phone the company and have a chat with their safety officer.
On one case I was able to call right away because the company's phone number was on the truck. They were able to identify the driver and phoned him with a reprimand right away.

I remember driving on I-10 in Texas and having to stop for a truck vehicle inspection. I assume it was the border patrol because they were looking for illegal passengers in truck sleepers. Somehow I can't imagine going 80 Mph in a 73 foot long vehicle and 85 is even worse. Driving 80 isn't the problem - stopping is.

It didn't come from Eddie Bower. Ford was using the name for their upgraded interiors.

The reply that says to activate your lights when being tailgated used to be a good idea but nowadays you just never know the mentality of the tailgating driver. Remember that there are people that would just as soon shoot at you as look at you!!. Be careful out there. Best to just move over and let the fool go by. Remember that Hell has lots of room left!

But I bet you there are very few pickup trucks or SUV in Italy.

The few pickups I remember were 1/4 ton. Any SUVs were mini ones. Anything larger wouldn't make down most side streets and many main roads. Most villages were built long before motor vehicles were even dreamed of. Even the country roads were narrow.

That's really what I observed. They drive like NASCAR country but their vehicles are no where having the handling, acceleration, or top speed near that of the NASCAR. I wonder why?

Not the handling, but some have the acceleration. Here is a link for a 9 second 1/4-mile full size pickup truck.
