The Coast Guard is the most under rated service in the US Government. In WW II they were not considered members of the Armed Forces but most of landing craft used in the Pacific War were piloted by Coast Guardsmen. I have been told that the unofficial motto of the USCG is: "You have to go out but you don't have to come back."
You Sir! are el correctoe mundo, I used to ride 44ft Motor Life Boats back in 73-75 out of Humboldt Bay/Eureka Ca, that picture of the 47 footer was take off of Cape Disappointment (Columbia river bar) You do have to go out, but you don't have to come back.... Semper Paratus!
Fantastic, went to his site and found some other great photos. Thanks for the post.
Thanks!! Nice one

USCG 75-83
My second day in the USCG was at Cape May NJ Training Center. Chief Raymond V. Kennedy formed us up after morning chow for the first time and told us all in a very stern voice: "There is one rule in the U S Coast Guard you will always obey. If there is a call for help YOU MUST GO OUT! There is no second rule that you must make it back."
We all were very impressed and even intimidated. This was 1965 and I can still hear his words today.
About 6 weeks into boot camp we had a class in small boats and handling them close to shore in shallow water. Chief Kennedy told us of his WW2 experiences of handling Higgens Boats. He was several places; Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and a few others I don't remember.
On graduation day he was in his class A uniform with so much fruit salad on his chest we couldn't believe it. There at the top of his ribbons was a Silver Star and a Distinguished Service Medal. Never forgot him, never will forget him.
This is a great shot of the brave and crazy USCG warriors. But if you really want to see them at their best, try to find some shots or videos of them in action up in Alaska, the Bering Sea. Many fishermen owe their lives to the Coast Guard, both on boats and on helicopters. Those people are insane!!!

You’re welcome. I’ve seen many images of the area where I grew up. This is one of the best and so I shared it. We now live two hrs east but return often to those environs.

Not my image but nostalgic for me. This was shot a few miles from where I grew up on the southern Oregon coast. A wild and windy environment with a trove of such memories.
These men and women are great and brave, well trained souls. All the small local towns hold these folks in the highest regards. They watch over the fleets of commercial vessels and pleasure craft like hawks, always at the ready. God bless them.
You've probably seen them watching the narrow Depot Bay entrance during storms.

Oh yeah, although our home was south of Depot. As kids Depot seemed a ways away, but not really so.
That’s a spectacular image
Very nice image. They have a base here, and they are respected.
