Having grown up in such an area I have nothing for the utmost respect for them. And I get inter service rivalry. Goes with the territory.
As a somewhat funny, in some ways, aside, I have a buddy who enlisted in the CG in the latter sixties. Thought he was smart and would remain stateside. Nope, wound up on riverboat on the Mekong. Uncle Same got the last laugh.
Funny how that works! I enlisted in the Navy out of high school in '72. Expected to go to Viet Nam. I thought everyone in the Military was going there! I realize now that things were winding down over there by then. My first duty station was Virginia Beach, VA! Managed to get into a Navy school. Graduated first in my class with a choice of available duty stations. Went to Guam and deployed to Viet Nam on an Aircraft Carrier late '73. Never went in country just sailed around in circles helping to launch Alpha Strikes. Later, I was there in '75 when Saigon fell to the North Viets and spent about two weeks rigging barricades on deck to catch all the small aircraft with South Viets fleeing the approaching bad guys.
