Not my image but nostalgic for me. This was shot a few miles from where I grew up on the southern Oregon coast. A wild and windy environment with a trove of such memories.

These men and women are great and brave, well trained souls. All the small local towns hold these folks in the highest regards. They watch over the fleets of commercial vessels and pleasure craft like hawks, always at the ready. God bless them.

I've seen the Coast Guard in action near Rockaway Beach. They are indeed brave. That's quite the image!

Well good on him. I was never in the USCG. I was a professional firefighter/paramedic with over 30 years service. There is a saying about the two professions that goes like this, “Same team, just different uniforms.”

God bless your grandson. Hope he enjoys it and excells.

The Coast Guard is the most under rated service in the US Government. In WW II they were not considered members of the Armed Forces but most of landing craft used in the Pacific War were piloted by Coast Guardsmen. I have been told that the unofficial motto of the USCG is: "You have to go out but you don't have to come back."

Not bad for brown water sailors!! Just kidding, there has always been a bit of rivalry between the Navy and the Coastguard, I've always had great respect for them.

Having grown up in such an area I have nothing for the utmost respect for them. And I get inter service rivalry. Goes with the territory.

As a somewhat funny, in some ways, aside, I have a buddy who enlisted in the CG in the latter sixties. Thought he was smart and would remain stateside. Nope, wound up on riverboat on the Mekong. Uncle Same got the last laugh.

Funny how that works! I enlisted in the Navy out of high school in '72. Expected to go to Viet Nam. I thought everyone in the Military was going there! I realize now that things were winding down over there by then. My first duty station was Virginia Beach, VA! Managed to get into a Navy school. Graduated first in my class with a choice of available duty stations. Went to Guam and deployed to Viet Nam on an Aircraft Carrier late '73. Never went in country just sailed around in circles helping to launch Alpha Strikes. Later, I was there in '75 when Saigon fell to the North Viets and spent about two weeks rigging barricades on deck to catch all the small aircraft with South Viets fleeing the approaching bad guys.
