AI image fools judges and wins photography competition. What do you think about AI-only generated images and their place in the photo world?

Interestingly UHH's software sees this AI art as a non-image attachment ,and wont let it be copied as an image in the body of the post. You can see it by clicking on the link and going to the article.

Tempest in a tea pot. Human art as the name implies is done by the brain of a human. And what might be called a visual as defined as done by nature--nature art for lack of a better term. AI is not done by a human so call it what you want. How or by whom or what produced it is key to naming. As for determining beauty---that is another topic altogether. The side of a weathered barn might appear beautiful "to a judging eye"----but as to defining the "artist"---human, nature, or machine highlights only a classification.-----------ew

I think you are putting the " Brain " in a box... The brain of man wrote the Algorithm that designed the image... The " Brain " of man defined the apparatus that allows you to see this post. EVERYTHING is changing with AI. Hold on and enjoy the ride...

Yes, the brain in a box is still the programmer's brain and we are back to square zero in our definition. Human and no AI or a creature from Mars?----------------

Interesting article.
I see the photo and it does not look real at all, goofy colors that in reality I doubt could co exist at the same time. I would not see it as AI because I do not know much about it but it sure looks like a way overcooked composite of several unrelated photos. Is that what AI is?

I think AI is a monster that has yet to be totally discovered.

Its the evolution of man and his capabilities... Yes, and the monitor I am looking at came out of an engineers brain. The AI in the new cameras are making our little hobby here more enjoyable regardless of the " Purist " perception... Do you still walk around with a suitcase and sticks over your shoulder when out for a photo shoot ?

What would you have if a an artist reproduced this AI image with paint and brush, then a photographer took a photo of the painting and printed it on canvas, followed by a street artist who takes the canvas reproduces the image on the side of a building ?

I give credit to the person who 'fessed up. But are we getting to a point when only the result matters?

AI images are digital art, not photographs. Since they may not even be photo based, they have no place in photography related contests.

Any contestant judged to be a winner should have to disclose their sources and methods, to ensure compliance with applicable rules.

If you are a photographic artist, you should be very worried. I think that photographic artists will have a hard time competing with AI generated or modified images. While artistic vision is still important, the craft required is going to be significantly impacted.

This is all a matter of definition. It would be hard (or, even foolish) to list the different creative methods to include in the definition of art. But it can be easy to list some methods to exclude.

I, for one, would exclude AI in the definition of art. A panel of judges in a contest could also do the same. Or, if they choose, they could include it.

Again, it is only a definition or just a preference.

The artist spends years learning to create images no one else could create in a life-time.

Hmmm. Some five-year-old with a brush recently exhibited his work. So years is not necessary. Lots of inclusions can be included in Art. Let’s just exclude AI.

Anything goes in art, any medium, any alterations, any AI too.

Photojournalism has ethical standards about photographing and changing reality, so top photojournalism contests now require the winning entrants to supply the unaltered raw file along with the submitted entry in order for the judges to certify there was no reality changed by AI, or PS alterations including replaced skies and layers. I am not sure what art photo contests do nowadays with all the post processing and AI. They likely allow much of it.

Cheers and best to you.
