The thing I took away from the story is there are a few bad cops, who allow power to over rule their judgment and take advantage of the situation with the illusion that they have ultimate power. The old saying, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Those cops are in the minority but get the majority of the press.

I think the cops should have been reprimanded or fired for abuse of power. This should and may have been vigorously pursued because cops necessarily have a lot of power over the public, so abusing that power should not be tolerated.

On the other hand $1/2 a mil seems a giant rip off to the hard working tax payers that government sucks up their hard earned money. Perhaps if the guy had a $4 million worth of perishable goods go bad while he was in custody, OK, but 1/2 mil is a hell of a lot of money in my neighborhood. Our judicial system really, really sucks, and obscene awards like this is one aspect that needs fixed, assuming a lot of the story was not told.

Possibly, because the settlement was so high, the higher echelon in the police department came down hard on these cops and sent them to re-education camp just to make a point. If it had been a small amount of money perhaps nothing much would have been done in house about police attitudes. We've all run across policemen who really shouldn't be in that job. Fortunately, the good ones far outweigh the obnoxious ones.

Definitely. Aside from boredom, why would they stop a truck driver who was walking to his truck?

The only answer I have for that is: because they could
Some people really trip out on power. Too bad they don't do a better job of screening that at the police academies.

I agree with you that most police officers would not participate in abusing their power and they face untold challenges day in and day out.

What concerns me so often in many of the events where police abuse their power is that many of the good officers also participate in the 'code of silence' where they will protect the officer's abuse. So to some extent even the 'good officers' are guilty to a degree.

Much needs to be done to change the laws that overly protect police misconduct.

Unfortunately the police unions have build the wall of blue pretty thick and it's extremely difficult to make changes...

If the amount had been small, it wouldn't have meant anything to the town. When you figure what the guy went through just doing his job, the $350,000 from the jury and the $150,000 added by the town definitely made an impression on the town. When you think that the driver was walking from the store to his truck with an invoice and muffins, why would the police have stopped him, except that they could? "Hey, let's have some fun with this guy." Police have a badge and a gun, and they're allowed to lie. In addition, they have special dispensations so they can't be held accountable for most of what they do. "Protect and Serve"? Don't make me laugh.

I remember the woman who was stopped for a traffic violation, and she said to the cop, "Please don't shoot me." Unfortunately, that was a reasonable request.

Jerry, I concur, and in the matter of the high $$$ award, that was to send a message that this type of treatment, is a clear and direct violation of the 1st and 4th amendment rights of everyday folks and will not be tolerated.
It would also seem that the elected folks in charge of the police would make sure that poor policy enforcement or lack of training would NEVER be an excuse again.
Independent police oversight and review would be a good start.
