I think the cops should have been reprimanded or fired for abuse of power. This should and may have been vigorously pursued because cops necessarily have a lot of power over the public, so abusing that power should not be tolerated.
On the other hand $1/2 a mil
seems a giant rip off to the hard working tax payers that government sucks up their hard earned money. Perhaps if the guy had a $4 million worth of perishable goods go bad while he was in custody, OK, but 1/2 mil is a hell of a lot of money in my neighborhood. Our judicial system really, really sucks, and obscene awards like this is one aspect that needs fixed, assuming a lot of the story was not told.

I believe the article said $375k to defendant, $125K for legal expenses. Still, seems a ton of money for a false arrest.
Maybe if he spent time, certainly more than a day, in jail.
Also, the article only gave one side to the story. No comments from the cops which is always suspicious.
I'd like to know what was done to the cops. As I said above, cops necessarily wield a LOT of power over the public, and those that abuse it need severe punishment imo. Bleeding the taxpayers is getting old.

If the amount had been small, it wouldn't have meant anything to the town. When you figure what the guy went through just doing his job, the $350,000 from the jury and the $150,000 added by the town definitely made an impression on the town. When you think that the driver was walking from the store to his truck with an invoice and muffins, why would the police have stopped him, except that they could? "Hey, let's have some fun with this guy." Police have a badge and a gun, and they're allowed to lie. In addition, they have special dispensations so they can't be held accountable for most of what they do. "Protect and Serve"? Don't make me laugh.
I remember the woman who was stopped for a traffic violation, and she said to the cop, "Please don't shoot me." Unfortunately, that was a reasonable request.
The thing I took away from the story is there are a few bad cops, who allow power to over rule their judgment and take advantage of the situation with the illusion that they have ultimate power. The old saying, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Those cops are in the minority but get the majority of the press.

"few" and "minority" should get a lot of press. And the few and minority seem to be not so few or minority these days.

It's gotten to the point that I feel uncomfortable when I see a cop. I'm an old white man, so I can imagine what it's like for others.

True, but unless the town knowingly hired power hungry hoodlums, the town shouldn't be punished but the out of control cops. They need fired or punished severely. Regardless, to me it seems 1/2 a mil for this is excessive to the extreme, and it's the towns taxpayers that's being punished. What happened to the cops is what matters. Which reminds me, I have only heard ONE side of the story, and there is always two sides to the story.
When I hear of obscene awards like this I immediately wonder who all is on the take for this crap. Punishing the taxpayers this much for the bad behavior of two fool cops doesn't seem like a good solution to me.

I guess cops have been picking on you a lot?
Cops always make me uncomfortable because they have the authority and power to put me in jeopardy. For me, it's always a driving issue, like speeding and whatnot. I've NEVER been confrontational to the cops, period.
So far, cops have never treated me any way but professionally, never once got out of line like you see and hear on TV.
I know it happens, but not often enough for me to worry much about it. For the most part, I think cops put up with far more crap than they should.

There is NO WAY the police can protect you, 99.99% of the time from crimes, to expect protection borders on lunacy.
The reason they can't protect you is they can't be everywhere at once!!!
To serve is another story To be as polite as possible, but not to kiss your butt.
I have worked with Law enforcement Officers earlier in my life Most were great people but a few were complete asses.
I have had good and not so good encounters with them. But I always treat them with respect , until they give me reason not to.
I have been threatened with arrest, but it hasn't happened.

One of these days some power hungry cop may knock your rose colored glasses off, Then I would like to hear what you have to say.

The two sides of the story are a matter of record. The lawyer explains it in the video. A large payment makes a large impression. Otherwise, the town and the cops would shrug and continue with business as usual. Taxpayers have paid out billions because of police abuse. Maybe the awards aren't large enough.
