I have an R5 and an R7. They are all fantastic cameras. The one, and only problem I have experienced with the R5 is focus breathing when the focus area is large, By narrowing it to a small window the problem goes away if I hold the camera steady. Using eye detection is fantastic if there are not a lot of eyes to choose from in the photo. Once it does lock onto one eye it stays focused on that eye.

I am still experimenting with the R7 to see if it does a better job.

Love my R5! Great upgrade from 5DM4.

It takes a little getting used to, but would not go back to my 5D4! Check out my posts here on UHH, all with the R5. The eye tracking is not always perfect, but when it works it is awesome! The buttons and dials are much better and using back button focus you can easily switch between spot and eye tracking. You can also do crazy crops. Just go for it!

I have the R7 and the R6II. Love them both. I sold all my Canon DSLRs although I kept some EF lenses as they work very well on the new bodies with the adapter.

Aloha UHHs,

I was about to press the purchase button for the Canon R5. But, I got cold feet after reading some of the reviews they were experiencing on Canon's website. Rating for this camera looks like a C+. For those who owns the R5, are you currently having or had issues with the camera itself? Is there a concern that I should be aware of?
This purchase would have been my last upgrade from my Mark 5DII, and I'd be taking it on my upcoming international travel.

My second choice might be the R7.

I have just bought the R7. The focusing system will blow you away. $1500 The best money I ever spent for photo equipment.

My Canon R5 has worked flawlessly since the day I received it. I cannot recommend this camera highly enough. I thought my Canon RP was amazing but this one is incredible. You will not be unhappy with the purchase.

I've had my R5 nearly two years, moderate to occasionally heavy use, no problems at all.
I've kept up with the firmware updates, and that may have helped. I don't shoot much video, bet even there the firmware updates have reportedly solved most problems.

I would have to agree with most of the previous comments. I came from a 5D4 and 7D2. I currently own an R5 (over 200,000 actuations), an R6 (50K actuations), and an R7 (10K actuations). Between my wife and myself we use the 3 cameras for bird photography. Very little video. IMO there is no comparison-the R5 is best! IQ, focus speed (at various times 800 f/11.0, RF 100-500, EF 100-400 II, 600 f/4.0 II, Sigma 150 f/2.8, RF 50 1.8), ergonomics. I would never go back to DSLR. I shoot very little video, so that is a non issue for me. I have had overheat warnings come with both the R6 and R5 when I have shot long repeated bursts in hot tropical sun. In neither case did the camera shut down and the warnings went away in about 5 minutes of being in the shade.
I have had all 3 cameras occasionally lock up and require battery removal to reboot. Not sure what the issue has been but once rebooted they all worked fine. That has happened twice with R5, once with R6 and R7.
Bottom line: when the R5 dies (hopefully a long time into the future) I will replace it with either another R5 or whatever equivalent Canon has out.

I have both the R5 and R7 and I thoroughly enjoy both cameras. I have not had any problems with either camera. Canon did initially have a few problems with the R5 overheating, but those issues have been resolved. I've shot several long videos with my R5 and it has not overheated at all. I didn't buy the R5 until after Canon fixed it's teething issues.

I will add that the overheating problems I heard of was for shooting video. Maybe only 8K video at that & is supposably better with a firmware upgrade.

I have owned mine now for a year. This is a great camera that has more options to customize than any one person will need at any given time. The only problem that I have experienced is that the focal points change inadvertently from shooting now and 5 minutes from now. I am sure Canon support will be able to cure it. While I still shoot with the 5 D III, it is my go to for tele shots with the RF 100-500 mounted on it.

I have both the R5 and R7. The R5 was a dream come true. It is always my primary. I only use the R7 when I really need the extra reach. I have nothing negative to say about the R5 after 3 years of use. Now for the looming question, will I be compelled to go for the R5 II when it is released?

I love my R5 and have had absolutely no problems with it. I was a Nikon SLR and DSLR user for 40 years before switching to the R5 mirrorless. I have had zero second thoughts. I don’t know how you concluded this is a C+ camera, it is not. I’d give it A or A+!
