My German history is not good, but for much of history around the world a woman's property was effectively the husbands if she married. Was this the case in Germany in the mid 1800's?

The old joke is: Fred is in the hospital dying and his wife is sitting next to him. With his last breaths he tells his wife that after he's gone she should marry Joe. She's says, I thought that you hated Joe. He replies, I do!!
