My registration costs $52 for two years. The State Inspection has gone up to $21. I remember when it was $3.00.

Inspection in NYC is a couple of dollars more than upstate (Ulster Cty)too, had it done up there a couple of times years ago.

A painted piece of aluminum isn't good enough for some states, so they are going digital. What could go wrong? Well, someone could hack the company that has all the data. They did it as a test to see if it could be done. Really? If a nuclear powerplant can be hacked, a license plate company is probably no better off. I just hope we have a choice of using them or not.

As low as $24.95/mo. Of course, that's just for the plate. You still have to pay annual registration. My fit costs $26/year for registration.

I don't know about other states But here in Missouri the inspection is a joke!! I was an inspector for over 40 yrs!!the passing tolerances are so great that the brake linings will not last to the next inspection, and the thickness and condition of the drums and rotors are not covered in the rules ball joints are just barely safe and will cause premature tire wear. Had it not been a requirement for my job I would not have been an inspector!!

Not sure what the advantage of a digital license plate would be. Can you change the number on your plate? I did see somewhere that you can change the text at the bottom of the plate to customize it. But that means that the license plate is a small monitor. Does it drain the battery? Does the text disappear if your battery is dead? What happens if a stone from the road hits your license monitor plate. Glass on the road and no license display? The plates on my truck required flattening regularly when the truck backed into something.

The disadvantages seem to me to outweigh the advantages.

Of course, if you can change the text you would be able to send messages to the bad driver behind you.

Yup.
And Vet records ARE checked by the state....
(We didn't give a copy of the license to the vet one year, so when they were audited, we had to FAX a copy to the vet so we wouldn't have to pay the "no-license penalty".)

With the lifetime I hopefully won't have to worry about that.

Not all states have motor vehicle inspections. I know that New Mexico does not. The condition of some of the vehicles where I go out there is interesting to say the least.

I was surprised when I moved to CT that they don't have vehicle safety inspections. They do have emissions inspections.

And with the tolerances allowed here you are just a few days short of a disaster in a lot of case.
Can you say false sense of security?

Go figure. They don't want you to get sick from air pollution but dying because of bad brakes is okay I guess.

Missouri has an "Adequate Control" law that pretty much amounts to a statewide leash law.

Yours doesn't? We've always had licenses for our dogs. I have to remove the plate when they poop, but otherwise, they get used to it. $6 a year.

Many police cars are equipped with license plate scanners/readers which have proven to be quite effective.

Living in New England I've found if Mass approves and does something we'll all have it rammed down our throats. Just look at all the NH front license plates. That came from Mass, as that how they collect and Id tolls on their roads. Just imagine a remote changing license plate.
