Fredericksburg and the Museum of the Pacific War. And the area abounds in vineyards. And then there are the Painted Churches...

Visit the battleship USS Texas. It has been in dry dock, but may be available for viewing. Near Houston.

I see you are in Massachusetts. That explains a lot.

I grew up in MN, and moved to Dallas and spent 39 great years there. The major problem I saw was people escaping from those high tax, liberal states & trying to impose their failed politics on TX.

Hi, I live in the UK and have been to the US many times but never to Texas.
We are thinking of visiting in Sept/Oct this year and would welcome any advice relating to places to go and things to photograph. We will probably fly in to Houston and out from DFW and have 2 weeks or so to travel.
I also understand that West Texas is very photogenic and would welcome advice on places to visit and stay.
Thank you

If you go to San Antonio, stay at the Menger, a wonderful historic hotel literally next door to the Alamo. You can walk across the street to the riverwalk. Kind of touristy but worth a stroll. For excellent tex-mex go to La Fogata or La Fonda.

If you go to Big Bend (3rd largest national park in USA) stay at The Gage Hotel in Marathon. You will be centrally located to go to Marfa (check out Ghost Lights and El Paisano Hotel}, Fort Davis, Alpine, McDonald Observatory and the Guadalupe Mountains. Very scenic but widely spaced. Fort Worth has the Stockyards and you can eat at Joe T Garcias, iconic Mexican restaurant.

If you go to Houston visit the Texas Medical Center. Too many restaurant to list, but the restaurant scene and variety rival NYC, San Francisco, anywhere. If you go to Galveston stay at at The Tremont and eat at Gaido's-classic Gulf Coast seafood. Don't go for the beach, it is not scenic. You can take the Bolivar ferry for a scenic 30 minute ride. Don't drive on, walk on, very interesting lots of ships and shipping stuff. Battleship Texas is in dry dock in Galveston and not available to tour at this time. Last of the dreadnoughts, fought in WWI and WWII and was at Normandy on DDay.

Palo Dura canyon is picturesque and has a large herd of Bison. Dallas has lots of museums and culture. Weather in October in Texas is very pleasant. My favorite month. Austin has the music scene and good BBQ. Don't go to Sixth Street . (full of drunk college students and worse). Hill country has Bandera for Honky Tonk dancing, etc. I could go on and on. You will love Texas, probably won't be able to see everything and I bet you will want to come back.

I stayed at the Menger Hotel in 1991. There are some photos of it in this Album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157626142208797/.

If you are traveling by car to El Paso once you get past Kerrville the speed limit it 80 mph(128 kilometers per hour) so the long stretch should be shorter.you might want to visit Carl's Bat Caverns I new Mexico while in El Paso.good luck.

Carlsbad Caverns, beautiful, went as a kid with my parents. If you make that short detour you may want to find a spot to get a Hatch green chile meal in NM also, if you like spicy foods.

Ran out of gas pulling a travel trailer between Amarillo and Abilene. Hadn't seen anyone on the road for miles. Called AAA and started to wait in the 90 degree heat without any AC. 10 minutes later a black pickup pulls up facing the opposite direction and asked in a Southern drawl, "Got a flat tire?" No, we're just out of gas. "I'll get ya some gas." Thanks, but we've got AAA coming. "Oh, they're coming from Abilene. You'll be lucky if they get here in two hours. I'll get ya some gas." Off he goes and 10 minutes later he's back with a can of gas and wouldn't let me pay him a thing! "It'll all work out down the line, he said." I told Gilbert that I was confused because I always heard that angels have wings and didn't have any. He laughed and followed us to the next exit and a gas station and then turned around back up onto the highway. I told the story to the gas station attendant and he knew Gilbert. What started out as the beginning of a bad few hours, restored my faith that there are good people in this world.

There are a lot more people like that then most believe, esp. in small towns or rural areas.

My wife learned that on our Honeymoon in mid Dec 73. She is LA Metro Area born and raised. We got to my hometown, my Grandmother was at my Dad's in St Louis for Christmas but my Great Uncle, next door, gave us the keys to the house. Well it snowed about 6-8 inches that night. Small town, no sewers, ditches with little bridges for the driveways and the snow had the bridge hidden and we were going to my Aunt's for an early home cooked country breakfast. So I waded into the snow and was guiding my wife in backing the car across the bridge, ice under the snow, one rear wheel slipped and dropped off the edge and the car was bottomed out on the bridge.
Two pickup trucks with about 6 guys driving by came to a stop, and they all came running over and grabbed onto the rear bumper and helped me lift the wheel back on the bridge, and one of them took over steering until the car was in the street. They asked me why I was back home. I told them we were on our honeymoon from Los Angeles. Debra tried to pay them, but they all laughed and waved her and the money away as they ran back to their trucks. One of those guys was from my HS graduating class, and he just yelled, "Explain it to her how things work here. We have to get to our goose and duck hunt before all the good blinds are taken." And off they went.
She was amazed that you only paid for help when you hired someone for it. They had volunteered, so no pay, in fact it was almost an insult to offer money when they volunteered. A lot different from what she was used to.
