In its February 2020 announcement, Sigma said it had to go ‘back to the drawing board’ with the entire camera and specifically pointed out that it needed to work on ‘the development of [Foveon] sensor technologies.’

Don't you own one of these?
How can you not know what is going on with your own chosen platform?

That's fine...but don't go around recommending this to anyone else.
You will get major push back...deservedly so.

As for the drawing board and the Foveon. You have no idea of what type of innovation they have or have had in mind except the promised full frame. No--the market no longer is demanding large sized in square inch sensors as the "full frame folks did." They are smart at Sigma and do not intend to get caught again with a revolutionary camera little understood by the up-scale "American" markets. Remember, they were making a $10,000 camera with the SD-1---but the critics shot down that price with little understanding of the revolution above the Bayer sensors. Now you can get one of those for a thousand dollars---a real bargain.

As for the other camera companies---some on this site say the entire DSLR market is dead and only algorithmic mirrorless are current cameras. Most on this site have DSLRs --now---Dinosours? So---keep it to yourself. The talk of a "full frame" FoveonX3 has been floating around for a decade. Why not settle for SD1-- 46megapixels in the raw files which are roughly 50megabytes of data. Isn't that enough for now? I have roughly 20 digital cameras ranging over the map and the SD1-Merrill is still tops in quality for color shooting. For those who need the latest flavor and features in their gadget cameras---keep buying the latest from your favored company. The manufacturers are not in business for their health and will continue to go where markets draw them.-------------ew

Canon G1X if no video use. May be a few $$ over; definitely want a spare battery.
It has a viewfinder! Fully articulating back screen. Larger sensor than 4/3s cameras.
Will fit in a pocket, but it is heavy for its size. Quiet. Great for inconspicuous use.
My coat pocket companion.

"Everyone" does not have one, at least a "smart phone". I have a flip phone and can barely use it to make calls, let alone take pictures.

It's not that they are against producing a full frame camera. How about the 61MP Sigma fp L? Of course, it uses a Bayer array.

Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. - Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

You can get one for under $1000 today because it was a failure. That APS-C sensor produced a 14.75MP image from 44.2 million sensels. It never achieved the claimed resolution although it might have been sharper than a 16MP camera with a Bayer array.

Anyone who has an SD-1 is probably trying to dump it if they can find someone gullible enough to take it. Is that why you are promoting it? You'll never get back anything close to what you paid for it unless you got it cheap from some other sucker.

You have posted only two decent images from any of your Foveon sensor cameras Each of them are from your SD-14 which produces an 4.64MP image. Neither of them demonstrates any remarkable quality. My iPhone can do better at 12MP.

Crawl back under your bridge and peddle you BS elsewhere.

You are a total jerk and idiot as I commented last night. Even though you put yourself out as an expert with a dozen articles and might even "teach photography", nothing that could not be transferred from any beginning book on photography. Maybe you are even old as you seem to have once used film--but many idiots are old idiots. Age doesn't make for smart. I cannot even say that someday you will realize the REVOLUTION the FoveonX3 created. Only the Japanese and the Germans and those who purchased the Mario Dirks O'Reily-phorto book OUR WORLD TOUR---shot with the revolutionary SD-1 Sigma--understand the scope of that camera. So--I hope you don't feel compelled to post again to show your ignorance on this topic?----------ew

You seem frustrated because you can't refute anything I have said about your beloved Foveon.

I have not seen anything from you that shows you actually know what you are talking about - no evidence and certainly no pictures.

I have posted lots of images scanned from film (no Bayer array) that are better than anything you have shown us. That doesn't even include my medium and large format work.

You are living proof that age doesn't make for smart. You are older than me.

Try and find somebody dumber than yourself to communicate with. I bet you can't.

OM TG-6 is the best travel camera for that $500 price range in my opinion.

Oh Gawd!!! heeeerrrrre we go folks. Well if you have followed this forum enough you know that when a member requests recommendations, suggestions, opinions and advice, especially when it comes to a camera. You received some good replies but any post like this can easily stir up nothing less than a monkey shit fight between some members instead of addressing the request.
You simply said he wants an 'easy to use and carry'.
I agreed with a member that a used or even a new small bridge or pocket camera. Depends if he prefers a shirt pocket sized one or bit more.
Last year a bought a used Lumix FZ300 bridge camera from Adorama. I think it just under 300 and like new condition with extra battery and charger. Lens has a 600mm reach and good sensor. I love it. Light weight too, can carry all day. Lots of good options based on what he really thinks his carrying needs may be. I have used smalll pocket cameras from Sony and Canon, not much of zoom reach but they took really nice pictures and they were old models too. So I hope this works out and it sounds for him.
Bruce.

When traveling to iffy places or in iffy weather, I take my Fujifilm Finepix S. It does excellent work with or without flash and has controls that allow you to manipulate your photos. I think I paid $300 new so I'm not out much if it gets stolen or damaged. It uses AA batts so no charger involved and you can buy those anywhere in the world.

Personally Iike the Lumix ZS-80 with a Leica designed 24-720 mm equivalent lens, 20.3 Mp, live view finder (use optional) PASM, compete manual control including focus, can be controlled remotely with your phone or pad and lots more features. Under $400. https://amzn.to/3ZBhMg6

As one who has and still travels a lot, I have struggled with “best” for years. When I take a “regular” camera, it ends up being VERY inconvenient with crowds, public transportation etc, plus attracts attention. The pocket sized ones do work better for me, but I always miss the control that a standard camera affords. The latest cell phones do a remarkable job, but seem to lack much PP capability in the raw files. I have tried the Oly TG-5, but am ALWAYS frustrated with results, especially in low light. Currently I carry a Panasonic ZS100 for its decent zoom and a Sony RX100va for F1.8 capability and tilt screen. Life is all about compromise…it seems.

First, does the person in question have a camera? If so, I recommend using it. That person has the muscle memory when it comes to using a camera you are familiar with. Just pack light. You won’t need 16 lenses and battery grips. Keep it simple. Have a safe trip and spend money on souvenirs.
