A friend of mine is going on sabbatical and will be traveling. He wants an easy to use and carry camera under $500. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
For under $500, I’d suggest a good, used bridge camera.

The best ( Sony RX100VI or VII) used, is a bit more than your $500 .....8-(

Just use their cellphone.
Unless he wants to make large prints ( a rarity today)...
Just take the cellphone...all he/she needs for posting on the internet and emails.
The convenience lost is not worth the print output difference...especially with a small pocket camera.
Cell phones are $1000
I love my Olympus TG 6

Except everyone already has one...so it's...free.
All cameras that have an AUTO mode are easy to use if all you do is use AUTO and take snapshots. Beyond that, photography gets harder.

What are this friend's expectations? Some photos to email? Some 4x6 prints? A 40x60 masterpiece to hang over the living room couch? Is he interested in undertaking a photography hobby? Is he a closet expert photographer who is just not current on what's available today?
Those are all excellent questions that I haven't had a chance to ask him yet. I plan to do that in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks to you and everybody above for your responses!
For convenience I always suggest either a bridge camera or an advanced pocketable. Most have great zoom range, all have viewfinders.
Pocketable
1/2.3"
Panasonic Lumix DCZS80
Sony HX99
1"
Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 (the ZS200 is above that budget)
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 (limited zoom)
Bridge
1/2.3"
Panasonic Lumix Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80
(1" models above budget)

I would recommend a decent point-and-shoot with an 1-inch sensor, like the Sony RX100 series, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100. These are a step better than cell phones. Otherwise, your friend might as well take images with a cell phone.
Bridge cameras can be convenient but they tend to be large and bulky. I do not think that they are suitable who is looking for a small camera for travel.

They are not $1,000
I see them at $170 or so.
