This is becoming a science project, as well as a somewhat veiled commercial to support purchase decisions made by others. I go back to my original concept that you cannot make a mistake. They are all great cameras by companies that will be around for years and who will continue to develop more lenses and peripherals. There are currently enough great lenses to choose from, that will meet/beat your needs on all platforms.
Pick the camera that feels the best in your hands.

Gee, I kinda like my Canon EOS R5 W/L glass, but after reading some of these comments I just don't know . . . . sigh (Grin)
Don't you just Love all of this Bench Racing?

I have enjoyed reading the entries on this topic. I am a Nikon user and except for a short foray into first Yashika and then Olympus, I have been shooting Nikon since 1970. I am comfortable with the ergonomics of Nikon, I like to be seen with Nikon and I am used to their menu. I would suggest that choosing between the brands is less to do with technology and much much more to the creativity, imagination and skill of the photographer. Period!

Canon has 30 native lenses in the R system and more coming. More than 95% of people would ever buy and the full range of price options. Who has sub 1K 800m and 600mm that have phenomenal quality and portability from any other major maker including major 3rd party? It amazes me how many just read anti Canon posts and are clueless about the large number of R lenses, more than most people would ever get any way.

They have just one minor pebble to throw, so they throw it often as if it was a cinder block. It's the new bitch-point, replacing the well worn out complaint about replacing the FD mount in 1987, a change that moved Canon from also-ran to global market leader.

They will never be consensus, *but* as a Sony shooter, I can tell you that the one thing I really enjoy is the freedom of choosing lenses from many manufacturers, which is impossible with Canon.

For example, one month ago, I purchased an excellent Tamron 18-28 f2.8 for which there is no native counterpart neither from Sony nor Canon.

Had I choosen Canon, i wouldn't be able to have such a lens.

Yes...they have some lenses...and more coming...pretty much said that.

But punishing the customer...on purpose...blatantly...means I cannot recommend them any longer.
I used to...right up to when they screwed their customers.

Hey...it's nothing right?

It's something you have to consider...and you have a company that obviously considers you...differently than Nikon Sony or the rest do. They are expanding options...not curtailing them.

Small case in point...anecdotal I'll admit...but true none the less.

Just bought the Tam 24mm f/2.8. Brand new for $150...it got great reviews optically even on the Sony A7RIV sensor...for $150 bucks.
Absolutely true...the lens is ...stellar.

Canon won't let their customers have that lens...they just won't.

That's how a company loses my recommendation.

It's not an insignificant setback for Canon users...told to just wait...buy Canon lenses...pay $350 for that same lens.

I have a friend that was trying to buy a new SUV. She had it down to a BMW and a Mercedes. They looked about the same to me. She was struggling through features, specifications and performance. I asked her what she thought she wanted to be seen driving in downtown Helena, MT. She bought the Benz.

Camera brands are like that. None at the high end will make significantly different images. It will matter more how you are perceived when other photographers see what you have hanging from your neck. Will you be seen as a traditional Canon expert or a skilled Sony technical pioneer.

I will tell you what I told my customers many years ago when I sold cameras. The major brands all produce high quality images. Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji and others are all quality cameras. You should not make your choice by soliciting advice of others if you are choosing between quality brands. You are going to spend a great deal of money on the camera. Choose one that you feel comfortable with and will take along on all your adventures without hesitation. Go to a camera store and handle all of the cameras. Select the one that feels good in your hands and has a menu system and button selections that are easy for you to use. That is the one you will want to use regardless of the brand name.

The one thing few ppl take into consideration is the lenses, after all what is making the image the glass! There isn’t one of the major system manufacturers that don’t make “consumer or kit” lenses that just aren’t as sharp or contrasty at the “pro-lineup”. All that said yes cameras today also have a roll in image quality. My point to this is don’t pair a top of the line body with a kit lens and expect top rate images…

Dont expect ANY consensus here in UHH, LOL.

Everyone will just trumpet their favorite brand and/or the brand they are loyal owners of.

Here is my two cents, and I expect pushback from fanboys of different brands, no problem.

I was a longtime Nikon, Canon and Leica pro user for nearly five decades as a professional photojournalist shooting all subjects around the world including war coverage, then I moved over to Sony mirrorless back In January 2017 and have no regrets. I am also a longtime Professor of Photographer at a state university, having taught hundreds of students in my courses in Photojournalism, Digital Photography, and yes even 35mm B&W film photography. I have both my BFA Degree and Master's Degree in Photography.

Back in 2017, Sony was the ONLY maker with fullframe mirrorless cameras. Sony's A7III success helped push Nikon and Canon into coming out with their own fullframe mirrorless cameras.

IMHO as much as Canon and Nikon have gotten better with their fullframe mirrorless releases, Sony still has the more extensive and proven fullframe mirrorless system and lineup by far.

The Top News Services in the world have all gone to mirrorless cameras in the past 24 months for their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide.

Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannett Media including USA Today have gone exclusively to Sony fullframe mirrorless for their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide. They are using Sony A1, A9II, A7RIVa, A7RV, A7IV, A7SIII, FX3, FX6.

AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9 and they use the Z9 for their staffers worldwide.

The latest weekly sales from Japan's top camera dealer network, Yodobashi , has the following models as their top ten best sellers:
1) Sony A7IV
2) Sony A7RV
3)Sony FX3
4) Nikon Z9
5)Sony A7C Kit
6) Nikon Z50 Kit
7) Sony A7IV kit
8) Sony ZV-E10
9) Fuji X-T4
10) Fuji X-S10

The Sony E-mount is the most widely produced and most widely used mirrorless lens mount in the world. There are over 200 native E-mount mirrorless-designed lenses from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon, Tokina, Zeiss, Viltrox, Yongnuo, Meike and others.

Canon has chosen to prohibit third-party lens makers from making any more RF-mount lenses. Already Canon mirrorless sales are down, as photographers around the world react to this restrictive move by Canon. I know this to be more than speculation as I administrate and moderate several Facebook photography groups and many folks around the world have said they have moved away from Canon R cameras for that reasons. Even Canon stalwart youtube reviewers now admit Canon's move is hurting their R series sales.

IMHO, sometimes when you get so big and successful like Canon ,you can lose sight of how best to grow your base.

Nikon has chosen like Sony to open up its Z-mount to Tamron and other third-party lens makers allowing its users to have more affordable and extensive Z-mount lens choices.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_third-party_Sony_E-mount_lenses

I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and currently own Sony A7RIV, A1, A7SIII . i currently have 13 native E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma and Tamron. i have no personal desire to return to Canon or Canon mirrorless for my professional or personal use.

Use what brand you prefer and be happy. I am more than happy with my Sony gear. Canon sells more total cameras worldwide but half those sales are its DSLRs and compact camera sales. Sony sells no DSLRs. As for Mirrorless, Sony is #1 in the world in both total mirrorless sales and is #1 in fullframe camera sales (DSLR or mirrorless). Sony sells fullframe mirrorless models, A7, A7II, A7S, A7SII, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, A9II, A7C, A7SIII, A7RIVa, A7IV, A7RV, FX3.

Cheers and best to you.

Read all the responses, (and expect there will be more). Love Nikon, but suggest you stay with Canon. Decide what focal length lenses appeal most to your shooting style and get the Canon R lenses that will go on your new R5. (and let us know what you finally do!)

Robert, of course, you are 100% correct!
I do Love the R5 and I find that the Canon EOS R5 has capabilities far exceeding my own.
I guess you missed the "Grin" at the end of the first line of my post.
My tongue was embedded deeply in my cheek.
Additionally, I'm pretty (read VERY) sure that any Top-Of-The-Line Sony, Nikon, Oly, etc. also have the capacity to greatly exceed my capabilities. (No Grin - Just Fact)
However, I do try hard, and I am persistent.
Best Wishes,

With the wrong brand, success is probably 99% luck. But with Canon equipment, it's 100% the photographer.
