I am considering buying a high-quality mirrorless camera. Being a Canon user for many years, of course, I am considering the Canon R5. But many reviews online say Sony mirrorless cameras are superior, and more lenses, including Tamron and Sigma, are available.
Please share your experience and opinions with me.

There is no consensus on best mirrorless camera.

But DPREVIEW did award the Sony A7R V best product of 2022. And there is a lot of sentiment that it is better than the Canon R5.

But I don't shoot Canon or Sony. So there is that.

At that level, it is not going to matter.

I have a friend that was trying to buy a new SUV. She had it down to a BMW and a Mercedes. They looked about the same to me. She was struggling through features, specifications and performance. I asked her what she thought she wanted to be seen driving in downtown Helena, MT. She bought the Benz.

Camera brands are like that. None at the high end will make significantly different images. It will matter more how you are perceived when other photographers see what you have hanging from your neck. Will you be seen as a traditional Canon expert or a skilled Sony technical pioneer.

Dont expect ANY consensus here in UHH, LOL.

Everyone will just trumpet their favorite brand and/or the brand they are loyal owners of.

Here is my two cents, and I expect pushback from fanboys of different brands, no problem.

I was a longtime Nikon, Canon and Leica pro user for nearly five decades as a professional photojournalist shooting all subjects around the world including war coverage, then I moved over to Sony mirrorless back In January 2017 and have no regrets. I am also a longtime Professor of Photographer at a state university, having taught hundreds of students in my courses in Photojournalism, Digital Photography, and yes even 35mm B&W film photography. I have both my BFA Degree and Master's Degree in Photography.

Back in 2017, Sony was the ONLY maker with fullframe mirrorless cameras. Sony's A7III success helped push Nikon and Canon into coming out with their own fullframe mirrorless cameras.

IMHO as much as Canon and Nikon have gotten better with their fullframe mirrorless releases, Sony still has the more extensive and proven fullframe mirrorless system and lineup by far.

The Top News Services in the world have all gone to mirrorless cameras in the past 24 months for their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide.

Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannett Media including USA Today have gone exclusively to Sony fullframe mirrorless for their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide. They are using Sony A1, A9II, A7RIVa, A7RV, A7IV, A7SIII, FX3, FX6.

AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9 and they use the Z9 for their staffers worldwide.

The latest weekly sales from Japan's top camera dealer network, Yodobashi , has the following models as their top ten best sellers:
1) Sony A7IV
2) Sony A7RV
3)Sony FX3
4) Nikon Z9
5)Sony A7C Kit
6) Nikon Z50 Kit
7) Sony A7IV kit
8) Sony ZV-E10
9) Fuji X-T4
10) Fuji X-S10

The Sony E-mount is the most widely produced and most widely used mirrorless lens mount in the world. There are over 200 native E-mount mirrorless-designed lenses from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon, Tokina, Zeiss, Viltrox, Yongnuo, Meike and others.

Canon has chosen to prohibit third-party lens makers from making any more RF-mount lenses. Already Canon mirrorless sales are down, as photographers around the world react to this restrictive move by Canon. I know this to be more than speculation as I administrate and moderate several Facebook photography groups and many folks around the world have said they have moved away from Canon R cameras for that reasons. Even Canon stalwart youtube reviewers now admit Canon's move is hurting their R series sales.

IMHO, sometimes when you get so big and successful like Canon ,you can lose sight of how best to grow your base.

Nikon has chosen like Sony to open up its Z-mount to Tamron and other third-party lens makers allowing its users to have more affordable and extensive Z-mount lens choices.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_E-mount_lenses

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_third-party_Sony_E-mount_lenses

I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and currently own Sony A7RIV, A1, A7SIII . i currently have 13 native E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma and Tamron. i have no personal desire to return to Canon or Canon mirrorless for my professional or personal use.

Use what brand you prefer and be happy. I am more than happy with my Sony gear. Canon sells more total cameras worldwide but half those sales are its DSLRs and compact camera sales. Sony sells no DSLRs. As for Mirrorless, Sony is #1 in the world in both total mirrorless sales and is #1 in fullframe camera sales (DSLR or mirrorless). Sony sells fullframe mirrorless models, A7, A7II, A7S, A7SII, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, A9II, A7C, A7SIII, A7RIVa, A7IV, A7RV, FX3.

Cheers and best to you.

You can’t beat the R5. With a simple adapter, whatever EF lenses you have will work. No third party lenses yet , but, you may not need new lenses. I have a 24-105 and a 100-400 r lenses and thinking have the bases covered. I also have a 1.4 TC I can use.

I have a close friend in San Antonio who is a photographer for AP. The day he told me that they went from Canon and gave him a kit with a Sony A7 IV and it twice the camera Canon was. It's IQ is unbelievable

Older DSLR-designed lenses are generally heavier and larger than comparable mirrorless-designed lenses that benefit from the shorter flange distance from lens to sensor with mirrorless, especially wide angle lenses. I know this from personally owning dozens of the best DSLR lenses from Nikon and Canon.

And new mirrorless-designed lenses have more modern optical designs and are testing sharper than DSLR-designed lenses, and have more modern and faster focusing motors. If there were no distinct advantages to mirrorless-designed lenses, Canon ,Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus and all third-party lens makers would never have even bothered to spend the development money to design and release hundreds of mirrorless-designed lenses. And from my vast experience, anytime you introduce any lens adaptors you introduce another piece of gear to possibly wear or fail over time.

I wont comment specifically on the R5 more than to say Sony and Nikon models fully compete and have their own advantages.

Cheers and best to you. If you are happy with your R5 that is fine, enjoy.

I prefer to buy cameras from companies whose primary business is and has been making cameras, not TVs and clock radios and games and headphones and whatever.

You won’t benefit from a Chevy vs Ford discussion on UHH - everyone will tout their favorite, which is invariably the one they own. Instead, drive as far as necessary and try both cameras at a brick and mortar store. Decide which feels best in your hands, which has the most intuitive controls and ergonomics, which menu system you feel most comfortable with and has the specific features you want. The fact is that either Canon or Sony or Nikon all make full frame cameras that will deliver outstanding results. Personally, I’d buy the R5 because it’s the best fit for ME and my inventory of Canon glass, but that may not be the right choice for YOU.

I am sorry but I must ask, what planet do you live on ? Sony has been making cameras and lenses for decades and is the world leader in developing and making digital image sensors.

From the vast majority of cameras and lenses in your smartphones, including in the top Apple iPhones, to industrial cameras, to still and video cameras for consumers ,to the best video cameras used by TV networks, to the best motion picture cameras used by Oscar-Winning and BAFTA-Winning Directors like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and others and their award-winning Directors of Photography, and countless more of the world's top cinematographers .

Do you watch professional sports like NFL games on TV, shot on Sony Cameras. Did you see Game of Thrones, shot on Sony Cameras. Did you see Top Gun/Maverick, shot on Sony cameras. Did you see Avatar/The Way of Water shot on Sony 3-D cameras, and countless other top films and TV dramas every year that use Sony cameras.

And top News Services and working pros around the world trust their work and their living to Sony still and video cameras and lenses.

Just some of the other recent movies shot on Sony cameras and produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment

If you already have a lot of Canon lenses, then stick with Canon. If your equipment is old, then switch to Sony, which is what I did when I went mirrorless. I own the A7RIV, a great camera, especially if you like to crop or print big or other applications that benefit from lots of pixels. If you have money to burn, then the A 1 is the best all around choice, but do you really need it want to shoot at 30 fps. If you are a sports photographer or avid bird photographer, yes.

I have three lenses, one Tamron 17-28 2.8,one Sigma 24-70 2.8, one Tamron 70-200 2.8, and Sony 200-600. I primarily use the Sigma. Since I can crop with out worring about loosing picture quality, it's the most versatile. The picture quality of all the lenses are topnotch. The Tamron lenses are all light weight. What you tend to give up is lens controls and stabilization, but that is all in camera, so no great loss. What I save in weight loss more than makes up for not having the controls on the lenses, not to mention the savings of hundreds of dollars over Sony branded lenses.

Finally, in terms of quality, you can't go wrong with any of the top camera makers. I'm not loyal to any camera company. You can always rent both cameras and try them out. Keep in mind that when you change camera brands, there is always a learning curve. Goodluck.

I'm waiting for Honda to start making cameras. They make everything from garden shovels to airplanes. You can mix in some of the best home generators, cars, eater craft and artificial intelligence along with robotics. I bet they will make one heck of a camera

I just looked around a bit and they already do make a camera. Honda LaneWatch™ helps give drivers greater awareness regarding what's going on along the passenger side of the vehicle. The system features a camera mounted on the bottom of the passenger's side door mirror. THis is great, mirrorless can't be far behind

I also have that Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 lens, the Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens and that Sony 200-600mm lens among my lenses. Love them all.

Just three examples:
1) Sony A7RIV, Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 lens. The Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, California, USA. 17mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/60 sec. handheld, sunset/dusk natural light.

2) Sony A7RIV, Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens. The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California, USA. 24mm, ISO 400, f8, 1/80 sec. handheld, all natural light.

3) Sony A1, Sony 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 lens. A Snowy Egrets takes off from it watery perch on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin. 319mm, ISO 1600, f6.3, 1/4000 sec., handheld, all natural light.

Cheers and best to you, whatever brand you choose.
