Whoops! My recommendation of WD Wireless Pro is meaningless. I read other replies, checked on B&H site, and see it is no longer manufactured. That's unfortunate that a good reliable product is discontinued, but glad I have on.

Can anyone recommend a portable backup and editing device that I can use on a photography trip to Icleand in March? I found the GNARBIX on B&H where reviews were good. My small laptop I used last in 2019 is a windows 7 device that was slow than and obsolete now. My goal.is to backup and view pictures addi.g as little weight to the camera bag as possible. I plan to have 6 SD cards with me for the 8 day trip to Iceland. Want to protect my experience!. The group has been very helpful in preparing me for my trip. Thanks in advance for any input.

If you have two card slots on your camera, double the # of SD cards you are planning to take and set the camera to where the 2nd card is set for backup, not for use as overflow when card #1 is full. That will protect you from a possible bad card. Bad cards are very rare but do happen. I would also take a pair of SDs for each day. At the end of each day, pull the cards and mark them day 1, etc. This will help you keep the trip in chronological order. Depending on your camera's Mpx, I would take at least 64 GB cards for 24 or fewer Mpx cameras and 128 for cameras with higher Mpx. That covers storage and a 7" ipad or Samsung will be sufficient to view the shot and add very little weight to your gear. Take two cords to connect your camera to the pad in case you have a bad or damaged cord as well.

Choose whatever size you need. I never use disk based backup anymore. The SSD's are far faster, no moving parts and powered via the USB connection - so also the simplest possible to use.

Using the Sandisk SSD portable drive, I will need a phone or laptop to transfer the images to the portable drive? I would prefer to travel without a laptop. A small iPad would suffice?

Thanks

I bought one of these for a recent trip to the arctic. I think it may be exactly what you are looking for and the price is VERY reasonable: https://www.amazon.com/NewQ-Filehub-AC750-Travel-Router/dp/B09T9QKQH7

Yes, it serves half the purpose. You still need to attach an external HD to it to receive the copied files. Wish somebody would make an all-in-one unit.

That's true, but there are very compact external drives available these days (that don't require a separate power source) or a thumb drive works too.

In the past I used the Mobilelite by Kingston which is very similar to the Rav Power and I found it very slow for file transfer. For me a hard wired on the go plug that accepts both an SD card and USB A or C is much faster file transfer. The file transfer speed is the same whether I am using my phone or tablet to control the transfer.

You will absolutely love Iceland. I was there on business about 10 years ago, and fell in love with the people and the scenery.

My wife and I returned for 10 days back in 2021. Everything you're looking for photo ops, and especially waterfalls galore!

Enjoy the trip!

"or a thumb drive works too." yes, that's probably the lightest solution..

You don’t have to transfer files wirelessly. You can connect the SSD drive with a USB cable and the unit has a built in card reader.

I purchased one of these SSD drives. But will I still need an intermediary device to transfer the files from my camera (Nikon D780 with USB-C connection) to this device?

Thanks

I only reformat my cards when they are full. Also, I try to keep the two SSD in separate locations. This and similar methods have worked for me for at least 10 years and twice alerted me to a bad SD card.

so, you have a USB c hub. Like this

USB C Hub, Acodot 9 in 1 USB C to 4K@60HZ HDMI Multiport Adapter, 3 USB 3.0 Ports, SD/TF Card Reader, 100W PD, USB C Hub Multiport Adapter Desigend for MacBook Pro Air HP XPS and Other Type C Devices https://a.co/d/5gv7HEV

Yes, that’s just a storage device. As far as I can tell the NewQ FileHub.

I have one like this it is smaller so it is great for travelling as light as possible. You may need more plugs that I di.

That is just a card reader. You can’t directly copy to a hard drive with it. The Filehub facilitates the transfer.
